Navi is the fairy companion of Link during the events of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Background
Since Link was a Hylian, he grew up without having a fairy companion, making him stand out from the Kokiri. However, when the Great Deku Tree grew ill from Queen Gohma, he assigned Navi to accompany Link. Navi's first impression of Link were that he was a lazy child, but her opinion of him changed as she accompanied him and assisted him.
Although Navi did not provide assistance in the form of healing or attack, she did provide Link with helpful information when she could. She also helped Link to target enemies. She was a constant companion in Link's quest, even going seven years in the future along with him.
