'''Misty''' is one of the gym leaders faced in the first generation games of the ''[[Portal: Pokémon|Pokémon]]'' series. She is the gym leader of Cerulean City's Pokémon Gym and specializes in water-type Pokémon. Misty is described as a tomboyish Pokémon trainer who loves the water.

=Background=

In ''[[Pokémon: Red, Green and Blue Versions|Pokémon Red, Green, Blue]]'' and ''[[Pokémon: Yellow Version|Yellow]]'' (as well as ''[[Pokémon: FireRed and LeafGreen Versions]]''), Misty was the second gym trainer [[Red]] battled in his journey. She was defeated and gave Red a Cascade Badge as well as TM 11: Bubblebeam (or TM 03: Water Pulse in ''FireRed'' and ''LeafGreen'').

Misty retained her leadership three years later during ''[[Pokémon: Gold and Silver Versions|Pokémon: Gold, Silver]]'' and ''[[Pokémon: Crystal Version|Crystal Versions]]'' (as well as ''[[Pokémon: HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions|HeartGold and SoulSilver]]''). Before [[Ethan]]/[[Lyra]] could battle her, they first had to find her. Misty was at the Cerulean Cape in Route 25 on a date, and while she was angry at him for ruining her date, she agreed to battle them after seeing that they had eight gym badges from [[Johto]], which meant that he must have been good. After being defeated, Misty gave them the Cascadebadge (and TM 03: Water Pulse in ''HeartGold''/''SoulSilver'') and asked if there were strong trainers in Johto, saying she planned to travel there one day on her own journey to battle skilled trainers. 

In ''HeartGold''/''SoulSilver'', she would later appear at the eastern end of Route 25 every evening from 4 to 6 PM (only after capturing or defeating [[Suicune]]), where she would exchange phone numbers with Ethan/Lyra. She then appeared there from 2 to 4 PM every day, where she would take a picture with Ethan/Lyra if they had a Water Pokémon at the front of their party. Calling her on Wednesday mornings (between the hours of 4AM and 10AM) will cause her to travel to Saffron City's Fighting Dojo for a rematch.

Misty returned in ''[[Pokémon: Black and White Versions 2|Black and White 2]]'' as a competitor in the Pokémon World Tournament held at [[Unova]]. She competed in the Kanto Leaders, World Leaders and Type Experts tournaments, as well as being the final opponent in the special download tournament titled "Gathered! Gym Leader!". She mentioned that she in doing so, she had made her dream of traveling and battling powerful trainers come true. If she lost, she would go on to claim that defeating [[Nate/Rosa]] will be her new dream.

===Let's Go!===

In ''[[Pokémon: Let's Go!|Let's Go, Pikachu!'' and ''Let's Go, Eevee!]]'', she was instead challenged by [[Chase/Elaine]]  and gave TM 29: Scald upon defeat. She made a second appearance at Vermilion City, having gone there in order to swim in the sea, and she would offer to guide the player to Diglett's Cave. She could also be challenged to rematches after beating the Elite Four in these versions. After hearing about how far the trainer had come, she became fired up about the idea of defeating them.

Misty specializes in water-type Pokémon. In all of the first generation games, her only Pokémon were a [[Staryu]] and a [[Starmie]]. In ''Gold'', ''Silver'' and ''Crystal'' (as well as the first ''HeartGold''/''SoulSilver''), she used the following Pokémon:

For "Gathered! Gym Leader!", she instead uses Starmie, Jellicent, [[Swanna]] and [[Carracosta]] in a double battle.

In ''Let's Go!'', she had [[Psyduck]] and Starmie for the initial battle (in reference to her Psyduck from the anime). For rematches, she had Golduck, [[Dewgoing]], [[Vaporeon]], Starmie and Gyarados.

=In Other Pokémon Games=

In ''[[Pokémon Stadium]]'', Misty was the second gym leader featured in the Gym Leader Castle. Her roster in this game, containing a mix of her roster from the first generation games and anime, consisted of Starmie, [[Horsea]], [[Psyduck]], [[Blastoise]], Staryu and [[Seel]] in the first round. She has Starmie, [[Exeggutor]], [[Seadra]], [[Dugtrio]], [[Blastoise]] and [[Dewgong]] in the second round. She later reappeared as the second enemy of the Kanto Gym Leader Castle in ''[[Pokémon Stadium 2]]''. She used Golduck, [[Poliwhirl]], Starmie, [[Togetic]] (likely an homage to her [[Togepi]] from the anime), [[Sunflora]] and [[Quagsire]] in Round 1. Misty instead used [[Nidoqueen]], [[Wigglytuff]], Starmie, [[Dragonair]], [[Ampharos]] and [[Politoed]] in Round 2.

Misty, as she appears in the anime series, was the third opponent in ''[[Pokémon Puzzle League]]''. She used a Horsea, Psyduck and Starmie in this game.

==Pokémon Masters EX==

She was also featured in ''[[Pokémon Masters EX]]'', where she and Brock were the first trainers to join [[Scottie/Bettie|the player]]'s team for the [[Pokémon Masters League]] in the Main Story's introduction. She was partnered with a Starmie, and her designed gave her a new outfit paired with her original hairstyle from the first generation games. There were also two variants of Misty that were later made available: a swimsuit one (from ''FireRed''/''LeafGreen'') that was paired with a Psyduck which was available through a limited Sync Pair-Up event that first went live at the end of August 2021, and a [[Sygna Suit]] variant (wearing a dress evocative of Vaporeon's coloring) paired with Vaporeon that could be recruited at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature starting at the end of September 2021. She has also been shown using Lapras in battle.

Misty made appearances as a supporting member of the player's team throughout the PML Arc of the Main Story and also helped in the effort against Team Rocket (in her Sygna Suit) in "Kanto: Team Rocket Returns", the initial chapter of the Villain Arc. She also appeared in several of the game's Events, including the Story Event "Reach for the Top", in which she took part in a team-on-team elimination battle that was proposed by [[Blue]], only to lose to [[Bruno]]. Misty also acted as an opponent who [[Elio/Selene|Elio]] had to defeat in a one-on-one battle for his [[Popplio]] to evolve in one of his Sync Pair Stories.

==Other Media==

*Misty appeared as a supporting character in the ''Pokémon'' anime series. She appeared in the first episode, where [[Red#Other Media|Ash Ketchum]] accidentally broke her bicycle. Afterwards she forced Ash to let her accompany him and became one of his traveling companions until he could repay her for the bike (which he eventually did). She did not have to worry about the Cerulean gym, as her three older sisters ran it instead. Misty was known to have an angry temper in the show, especially towards her Psyduck, but also showed a nurturing side when raising a young [[Togepi]]. Misty accompanied Ash in [[Kanto]], the Orange Islands and [[Johto]], then departed afterwards to return to Cerulean Gym (at which point she ran the gym completely, with her sisters away on a cruise). She has made several small appearances since then, including her and Brock having a reunion with Ash in a two-part episode of the ''Sun and Moon'' series.
*In the manga series ''The Electric Tale of Pikachu'', Misty appears in a role that is primarily based on her appearance in the first series of the anime, including acting as a traveling companion for Ash and having three sisters. In this version, for her gym challenge, she steals Ash's hat and challenges him to retrieve it from her.
*Misty appears in the ''Pokémon Adventures'' manga, where she is initially one of the only "good" gym leaders operating in Kanto, and she often works in conjunction with [[Brock]] and [[Erika]] (as well as later [[Blaine]]) against Team Rocket. She first meets Red by Mt. Moon, when he is able to defeat her [[Gyarados]] that was captured and brainwashed by Team Rocket. She reveals herself as a gym leader and initially defeats Red at the Cerulean gym, but she then trains him to prepare for Team Rocket and gives him the Cascade Badge. She appears several more times in the ''Red''/''Green''/''Blue'' arc, and saves Red from drowning as well as trading her Gyarados to him for his [[Krabby]] so that he could use Surf. She later also helps Yellow in the ''Yellow'' arc. In the ''Gold''/''Silver''/''Crystal'' arc, she and Brock help Red to prepare for his gym leader examination. During the competition against the Johto gym leaders, she defeats [[Whitney]] with ease. [[Suicune]] chooses her as its temporary master, and she battles [[Pryce|the Mask of Ice]] with Blaine and [[Lieutenant Surge]], though they ultimately fail to defeat him. Throughout this arc, she is also shown to have a crush on Red and struggles to admit her feelings to him, as well as feeling jealousy of his closeness with Yellow, who is secretly a girl, and the love triangle is ultimately unresolved.

*Misty's name is a simple play on the word 'mist'. Her Japanese name is Kasumi, which also means 'mist'.
*Misty's idol is [[Lorelei]], a member of the [[Elite Four]] who specializes in Ice-type Pokémon.
*''FireRed'' and ''LeafGreen'' adds some foreshadowing about Misty's love life in ''Gold'', ''Silver'' and ''Crystal'', as a young couple at Cerulean Cape notes that the area is quickly becoming a romantic spot, and that Misty in particular has high hopes about it.
*Misty also appeared as a trophy in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'', wearing her outfit from the anime.
*In ''Pokémon Masters EX'', Misty explains that the Starmie she uses on Pasio is not the same Starmie that she used at the Celadon Gym. Rather, it is one that hatched from an egg at the Day Care Center and is described as having been clumsy as a Staryu.
