The Klump first appeared in Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Land, and it was notable as the first enemy appearing in the game that Diddy Kong could not defeat as easily as Donkey Kong. That was because the hard helmet worn by Klumps was strong enough to repel Diddy's jump attack, so Diddy could only beat them with his cartwheel attack, while Donkey Kong could still defeat them with normal jumping attacks. They appear in the early jungle levels, as well as levels of Kremkroc, Inc. and the Chimp Caverns.

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Land 2, the Klumps appeared again and were among the Kremlings conforming to the pirate theme. The pirate version of Klump was called Kannon, due to the miniature cannon that they carried around and used to fire kannonballs and Diddy and Dixie Kong. Kannons usually remained stationary and fire kannonballs continuously. They wore large pirate hats instead of their trademark helmets, which left them vulnerable to Diddy and Dixie's jump attacks.

The Klump returned to their original look in Donkey Kong 64, except that this game's Klumps were more obese. They attacked by lobbing explosive Oranges at the Kongs and sometimes ate the oranges as well, causing them to belch out puffs of smoke. These variations of Kliumps could only be defeated by tossing exploding Oranges at them.

A Klump also appeared as an unlockable playable racer in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, and it served as the Kremling rival for Lanky Kong. However, this Klump looked different from the classic Klumps due to having green skin and a barrel helmet in place of the classic hardhat. He was unlocked by completing Candy's Challenge 16, which involved defeating Klump in a race.

*Klump also appeared as a character in the Donkey Kong Country cartoon. There he was one of King K. Rool's two main lackeys and a drill sergent-type guy. There was another character, the pirate Captain Scurvy, who somewhat resembled the Kannons from the second game. One episode revealed Klump and Scurvy to be long-lost brothers.
