Kafei is a supporting character (as well as temporarily playable) in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Background

The son of Mayor Dotour and Madame Aroma. As a boy he became a close friends with another boy who would grow up to own the Curiosity Shop, and this friend even gave Kafei his own Keaton Mask at one point. Kafei kept the Keaton Mask safe for years. He also met Anju, the girl he loved, and they promised to one day exchange their masks on the eve of the Carnival of Time.

Kafei grew into a capable young man, but also suffered a tragedy in Majora's Mask. He had just finished making his engagement mask, the Sun's Mask, and was only a month away from his wedding with Anju. But then the Skull Kid used the power of Majora's Mask to turn Kafei into a little boy. He went to see the Great Fairy in North Clock Town for help, only to be attacked by Sakon. Defenseless as a child, Sakon mugged the Sun's Mask from Kafei. Kafei could not bear to face Anju without the mask, so he disguised himself by wearing the Keaton Mask and spent the next month hiding out in the back of the Curiosity Shop, where he kept an eye out for Sakon- a known regular of the place.

Soon there were only three days before the Carnival left, and Kafei decided to send a letter to Anju assuring her of his safety. On the second day he got a letter back from Anju and was visited by Link, who was helping Anju and Madame Aroma to find Kafei. Kafei told Link his story but told him not to tell Anju and gave him his Pendent of Memories to deliver to Anju as a promise that he will return. On the second night, Sakon finally paid a visit. Leaving behind the Keaton Mask and a special letter for his mother, Kafei followed Sakon to his hideout by Ikana Canyon, then waited all through the third day for Sakon to return and open the door to his hideout. In the meantime Link caught up to help Kafei. Together that night they overcame the puzzles of Sakon's security system and retrieved the Sun's Mask.

By the time they retrieved the Sun's Mask, it was already past midnight, and the moon began falling towards Clock Town. Kafei rushed back to Clock Town and meets with Anju at the Stock Pot Inn. Anju recognized Kafei even in his child form. There they exchanged their masks, and the Sun's Mask and Moon's Mask fused to become the Couple's Mask. They gave the mask to Link, the witness of the ceremony, and embraced each other for the last moments before apocalypse.

After Link and the Giants defeated Majora's Mask and stopped the falling moon, Kafei was presumably restored to his adult form. He and Anju then underwent a public wedding ceremony during the Carnival of Time, at the dawn of a new day.

Other Appearances

  • Kafei appears in the last two installments of the Majora's Mask manga. In this version he retains the Sun's Mask and the only reason he does not want to see Anju is because of his appearance. Kafei winds up accompanying Link to his final confrontation with the Skull Kid on the Clock Tower in an attempt to get him to reverse the curse, and he is reunited with Anju when Tatl brings her there. He is lastly seen in the wedding scene at the end. As in the game, he is obscured but is clearly shown to be an adult again (while a flashback to Skull Kid cursing him has most of him visible except his face).

Trivia

  • Kafei was the first time another character (besides Link) was playable in a Zelda game, even for a short time.
  • In the ending, he is effectively obscured by Tingle. It's possible he wasn't reverted to an adult. Or it may have just been a teaser or a way of not having to create an adult Kafei sprite.
  • Kafei's clothing appears in Animal Crossing as a purchasable item, erroneously known as "Kaffe's Shirt". A clothing set for Anju also appears in the game.
  • A sticker of Kafei appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
