Debut Earthbound

Jeff is one of the party members appearing in Earthbound. He is one of the Chosen Four, along with Ness, Paula, and Poo.

Background[edit]

Earthbound[edit]

Jeff lived in the northern country of Winters, where he attended Snow Wood Boarding School. His roommate and best friend was named Tony. He was the son of renowned scientist Dr. Andonuts, but he never saw his father despite his lab being in close proximity of the school. He naturally developed into an intellectual person and mechanic, who was known for being both shy and reckless.

During Earthbound, he went into action after he received a telepathic call from Paula, who wanted Jeff's help in saving her and Ness from a trap. Tony was confused by Jeff's attempt to leave in the dead of the night, but he trusted Jeff enough to help him escape from Snow Wood. Jeff also received some aid from older student Maxwell, who offered to record Jeff's progress for him whenever he called. Jeff voyaged southwards due to Paula's instructions, temporarily being accompanied by a Bubble Monkey. Eventually he reached his father's laboratory, where he saw Dr. Andonuts for the first time in ten years. His father allowed him to use his Sky Runner to get where he was going and suggested Jeff visit him again in another ten years.

Using the Sky Runner, Jeff was able to travel from Winters to Threed and conveniently crashed into the same underground prison that Ness and Paula were being held in. After introducing himself and being accepted as their new friend (thus joining the party), Jeff used his bad key machine to break them free. From then on, they continued on their journey. He and Ness wound up traveling by themselves for some time after Paula was captured by Mr. Monotoli, but they were able to free her. Jeff was then able to repair the broken Sky Runner, which they used to return to Dr. Andonuts's lab in Winters so that he could program it to take them to Summers. His mechanical abilities continued to come in handy throughout their quest, even fixing a yellow submarine for the group to travel in.

Eventually, Dr. Andonuts had to place their minds and spirits in robot bodies so that they could travel back in time for the final battle with Giygas. They were successful in destroying Giygas, and their spirits then rejoined their bodies in the present, leaving the broken robot bodies behind in the distant past. The friends then parted ways, with Jeff telling Ness and Paula that it was great hanging out with them. He also offered to become the guy who fixed their broken appliances if they ever got married one day. Jeff then remained in the Saturn Valley to spend time researching with his father.

Mother 3[edit]

Jeff himself never appears, but there are references to him in New Pork City.

Abilities[edit]

Jeff is the only one of the Chosen Four that has no psychic ability. Instead, he is able to take broken things and make them into new weapons. He repairs items whenever the group stays at an inn, depending on how high his IQ stat is. He is also to use certain items no one else can, such as bottle rockets, bazookas, and lasers. Jeff can also spy on the enemy in order to determine their statistics and weaknesses.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • Within the Super Smash Bros. series, Jeff initially appeared as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee and went on to appears an Assist Trophy in addition to a normal trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. As an Assist Trophy, he used the Multi-Bottle Rocket 5, which launched four mini-rockets and one mega-rocket throughout the battlefield, Jeff himself cowering while the rockets were launched.
    • He was also represented by a sticker in Brawl and a Legend Support Spirit in Ultimate. His Spirit's Support effect was to slow down the charge rate of the opponent's Final Smash meter. In Spirit battles, Jeff's Spirit would possess a team of three Inklings in a battle where the firepower of his team was strengthened, and his Assist Trophy periodically appeared.

Trivia[edit]

  • His name can actually be chosen by the player, but Jeff is first in the list of default names and is his canon name. The Japanese version notably included some themed names among its list of default names, as Jeff's potential names included Luigi (for a Mario Bros. set) and Paul (after Paul McCartney, for a Beatles set).
  • Jeff bears some resemblance to Lloyd from the original Mother (although not to the degree that Ninten resembles Ness) and acts as his counterpart.
