The Happy Mask Salesman is a mysterious character who has appeared in several games of the The Legend of Zelda series. He usually presents himself as a jovial seller of masks, but he shows hints of being more sinister and can quickly become furious when things do not go his way.

Background[edit]

Original Appearances[edit]

The Happy Mask Salesman first appeared in Ocarina of Time. He ran the Happy Mask shop in Hyrule Castle Town and enlisted Link as a salesman to sell masks for him. After Link had sold enough masks, the Happy Mask Salesman allowed Link to borrow a mask whenever he wanted. After the seven years that passed in the game, during which Hyrule Castle Town was destroyed, he was only seen attending the festivities at Lon Lon Ranch in the game's ending.

The same salesman (or his Terminan counterpart) appeared in Majora's Mask. The Happy Mask Salesman had gone to great lengths to find Majora's Mask, but it was later stolen from him by a mischievous Skull Kid. This led him to confront Link, whom had been turned into a Deku Scrub by the Skull Kid. They met in the clock tower of Clock Town in Termina.

The Happy Mask Salesman seemed to be aware of the Skull Kid's plans to destroy Termina, as he gave Link three days to find Majora's Mask and recover his stolen Ocarina of Time. Link returned with the Ocarina, and Happy Mask Salesman taught him the Song of Healing, which sealed Link's Deku Scrub form in the Deku Mask and restored the Link to normal. However, he then became angry when he discovered that Link had not yet recovered Majora's Mask. After Link defeated Majora's Mask at the end of the game, the Happy Mask Salesman collected it and went along on his way.

The Moon Children[edit]

One mysterious detail of Majora's Mask is the masked children who appear on the moon in the climax of Majora's Mask. Each asks Link to become a mask salesman for them. Whenever Link finds them in hide-and-seek, they have taken on humanoid forms. Familiar red hair peeks out from their masks, suggesting some type of relation to the Happy Mask Salesman.

Other Games[edit]

The Happy Mask Salesman also appeared in Oracle of Ages, where he ran a shop on the outskirts of Lynna City. If Link brought him some Tasty Meat to satisfy his hunger, then the salesman would give him a Doggie Mask in exchange.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Happy Mask Salesman has been represented as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and as an Advanced-Rank Support Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. His Spirit's Support effect was for the player's fighter to start off battles with 30% damage and heightened attack power. When fought in a Spirit battle, his Spirit would possess Young Link (in his Dark Link costume) and fight in a timed battle where all fighters' jumping ability and movement speeds would raise.

Trivia[edit]

  • His eyes are almost always closed. He only opens them when he gets angry.
  • He can play the organ.
  • His collection of masks includes one of Mario.
  • While in Ocarina of Time the Happy Mask Shop resembled most other shops, it was altered in Ocarina of Time 3D to look more luxurious. Additionally, his backpack and collection of masks from Majora's Mask were also on display within the shop, which seems to further hint that the Happy Mask Salesman in both appearances are one and the same.
  • In the Majora's Mask 3D, the Happy Mask Salesman also gives link the Bomber's Notebook.
