The Goomba King, alternately known as the Goomboss, is a boss character appearing in several Mario games.

Background

A mysterious character, Goomboss was presumably a common Goomba who asked Bowser to make him bigger. Bowser did so with the power of the Star Rod, hoping that he would be able to impede Mario's journey to take the Star Rod away from Bowser. Goomboss recruited Red and Blue Goomba (the Goomba Bros.) to help him stop Mario, and also built himself a fort to conceal the bridge from Goomba Road to Toad Town. Despite all this, Mario defeated him and put the bridge back, sending Goomboss flying to who-knows-where.

Goomboss also appears in Super Mario 64 DS, having kidnapped Mario for his constant torment of the Goomba race. Yoshi comes to Mario's rescue and defeats Goomboss by turning his Goomba followers into eggs and throwing them at him.

In Mario Kart DS, Goomboss challenges Toad to a three-lap race in Baby Park during the Mission 3 Boss Stage. During the race, Goomboss tosses Goombas and the occasional Mushroom at Toad to slow him down. After each lap, Goomboss grows bigger and drops more Goombas, and even jumps a corner during the third lap. He also stops more frequently, making it fairly easy to slip past at the last moment.

Trivia

  • The Goomba is one of few Paper Mario characters to appear in a game outside of the Paper Mario franchise (the others being Tutankoopa and the Star Spirits). However, Toad Town was also featured in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
  • His presence in Super Mario 64 DS, which appears to be a retcon of Super Mario 64, has caused confusion as Paper Mario is considered to take place after Super Mario 64 due to having been released after it. Either Super Mario 64 DS takes first (which means Goomba King was already big, so it's unsure how Bowser could have empowered him with the Star Rod), or Paper Mario does.
