'''Giratina''' is a demonic legendary Pokémon of Sinnoh that was introduced in the fourth generation games and was featured as the mascot for ''[[Pokémon: Platinum Version]]''. It rules the [[Distortion World]] and completes the fourth generation's primary trio of legendary Pokémon with [[Dialga]] and [[Palkia]].

=Information=

Giratina is a mysterious Pokémon that was apparently created with [[Dialga]] and [[Palkia]] by [[Arceus]], who gave birth to them in egg form. However, it was banished to a reverse dimension known as the Distortion World, apparently for its violence. This led to it being forgotten by Sinnoh mythology, and it is suggested that even its name is taboo. It was known to appear at an ancient cemetery (possibly referring to Turnback Cave). 

Giratina is also known for possessing two different forms, an Altered Forme (in ''Diamond''/''Pearl'') and an Origin Forme (in ''Platinum''). Its Origin Forme is long and serpentine, and used when Giratina is traveling between dimensions. Giratina's Altered Forme has legs. It remains in Origin Forme when in the Distortion World and changes into Altered Forme when entering the real world, although it will maintain the Origin Forme if it is holding a Griseous Orb. Gameplay-wise, the two forms have different Abilities as different base stats (with the Altered Forme having higher Defense and Special Defense while the Origin Forme has higher Attack and Special Attack).

During the storyline of ''Platinum'', [[Cyrus (Pokemon)|Cyrus]] of [[Team Galactic]] attempts to summon Dialga and Palkia directly to the Spear Pillar atop Mt. Coronet using two Red Chains, but Giratina disturbs this and breaks the chain, leaving behind a portal to the Distortion World. Giratina must be defeated or caught within the Distortion World to preserve the world's balance.

In ''Diamond'' and ''Pearl'', Giratina appears at the end of Turnback Cave (where the separation between the real world and Distortion World is weaker).

In ''Platinum'', Giratina originally appears in the Distortion World in Origin Forme, where it must be battled to progress through the game. If it is defeated rather than caught, it will reappear in Turnback Cave (in its exact location from the other versions) in Altered Forme. It will also reappear there again if it is once more defeated without catching it. A portal to the Distortion World appears where Giratina once was after being defeated/captured.

Giratina can also be obtained in ''[[Pokémon: HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions|HeartGold and SoulSilver]]'' through an event requiring Arceus. After traveling to the Sinjoh Ruins, Arceus will release an egg containing the player's choice of a Dialga, Palkia or Giratina at Level 1.

Giratina appears in ''[[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Space]]'' as the boss of the World Abyss in Secret Wonder Mail Mission, found on the 30th floor and guarding the Rock Horn. It could also be obtained in ''[[Pokémon Rumble]]'' with a ticket obtained from releasing [[Gengar]], [[Spiritomb]], [[Dusknoir]], [[Dragonite]] and [[Garchomp]]. In ''[[Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs]]'', it was featured in a bonus mission where it appeared at the Oblivia Ruins where the player had to capture it in its Altered Forme and then again in Origin Forme after retrieving its Griseous Orb. It also appeared in the follow-up mission where it had to be battled in its Origin Forme at the Sky Fortress, and it had to be defeated along with Dialga and Palkia in order to reach Arceus.

*In the ''[[Portal: Super Smash Bros.|Super Smash Bros.]]'' series, Giratina (in its Altered Forme) has appeared as one of the Pokémon that can be summoned at random from the [[Poké Ball]] item in ''[[Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U]]'' and ''[[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate]]''. When summoned, it will unleash its Dragon Breath attack as a whirlwind of energy that travels across the stage. 
**It has also been represented by a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U game and two stages of a Primary [[Spirit]] in ''Ultimate''. The initial Spirit was an Ace-rank Spirit of Giratina's Altered Forme. By raising it to level 99, the Spirit could be enhanced into a Legend-rank Spirit of Giratina's Origin Forme that also could raise the damage done to shields by the player fighter. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Giratina's Spirit would possess a giant [[Mr. Game & Watch]] in a battle that would start with Giratina being released from a Poké Ball and would also involve the screen periodically flipping.

==In Other Media==

*Giratina is featured in the eleventh movie of the ''Pokémon'' anime, where it ambushes and attacks Dialga to repay it for the damages that Dialga's battle with Palkia in the previous movie had caused to the Distortion World. Throughout the movie, Giratina was also sought by the villain Zero who sought to exploit Giratina's power and control the Distortion World, but Giratina ultimately escapes and continues its pursuit of Dialga. In the twelfth movie, Giratina ambushes Dialga and Palkia just after they made peace, causing their battle to begin anew. However, Giratina is ultimately calmed after recalling how Ash helped it defeat Zero and the three ultimately unite to help in the conflict with Arceus.

*Giratina's name is possibly a play on platinum (compared in Japanese, where they are spelled as "giratina" and "puratina" respectively) or guillotine.
*Giratina and the Distortion World were apparently conceived as personifications of antimatter.
*The Griseous Orb cannot be traded; thus, the only way to have a Giratina in Origin Forme in ''HeartGold''/''SoulSilver'' is by obtaining it through the Arceus event.
