Red is a Pokémon trainer from Pallet Town. He lived alone with his mother and grew up as the best friend of Blue. In Pokémon: Red and Blue, he received his first Pokémon from Professor Oak and set out to travel across Kanto to discover and capture all 150 species of Pokémon for his PokéDex. Not only that, he also sets out to defeat the eight Gym Leaders and the Elite Four to prove himself as the Pokémon Champion.

In the game, Red's name is chosen by the player, though one of the default names is Red. He reappeared in Pokémon: Gold and Silver as an accomplished trainer. The character Ash from the Pokémon anime series was largely based on Red's appearance, though the two were clearly differentiated by Red's updated look in Pokémon: Fire Red and Leaf Green. Red will make his make his Smash Bros. debut in Super Smash Bros. Brawl in 2008 under the moniker Pokémon Trainer, where he will command his three Pokémon: Charizard, Ivysaur, and Squirtle.
