The timeline for the F-Zero series is separated into two main continuities. The first followed F-Zero and the second follows F-Zero: GP Legend.

Original Timeline[edit]

This timeline begins with F-Zero in the year 2560. Earth has made contact with multiple alien species and is a member of the Milky Way Galactic Federation. The F-Zero Grand Prix up until this point has been around for awhile.

Three years after this, the "Horrific Grand Finale" occurred. A large accident on the track occurred that included several casualties, including that of Sterling LaVaughn. The accident was believed to have been caused by Pico and only Super Arrow made it across the finish line. Somehow the pilots Captain Falcon, Samurai Goroh, and Dr. Stewart were able to avoid the accident, perhaps by not being present for the Grand Finale. The Mighty Gazelle, another survivor, took the most serious injuries and survived only by being reconstructed as a cyborg.

Seven years after that the F-Zero Grand Prix was reestablished with new safety standards, titled F-Zero X. Many of the old pilots returned as well as an influx of newcomers now that the races were no longer such an extreme race. Captain Falcon was the winner of the Grand Prix that year.

The races continued into the next year (2571) with even more racers (F-Zero GX). This time Black Shadow was hatching a plot to eliminate the other F-Zero racers outside of the Grand Prix in order to increase his chances, but his efforts were foiled by Captain Falcon.

In the year 2585, a new generation of racers emerged in the game Maximum Velocity. This event is often considered an alternate sequel to F-Zero, since the safety regulation of F-Zero X are not mentioned in this game. Despite this, the Wiki considers this as part of the same timeline as the previous games.

GP Legend Timeline[edit]

The F-Zero series received a continuity reboot with F-Zero: GP Legend. This game takes place in the year 2201 and is based largely on the anime of the same name. Although the original 30 racers of F-Zero X appear here, the new pilots of F-Zero AX have been discarded and replaced with characters specific to the anime. (The character Deathborn, introduced in GX, still appears though).

The game F-Zero Climax also follows this continuity, but was never released outside of Japan, making details about the events of this game scarce.

Significant differences is the new protagonist is Rick Wheeler, a detective who was put into cryogenic stasis the year 2051 after a battle with his nemesis, Zoda. This also means that Super Arrow and Zoda are no longer arch-enemies as well. Most of the villainous racers belong to an organization known as Dark Million and work under Black Shadow and Deathborn.
