Like Master Hand, Crazy Hand's origins are mysterious, but they seem to be somehow linked to the "real world". Crazy Hand is described as being the manifestation of the destructive spirit in contrast to Master Hand, who represents the creative spirit. Crazy Hand is also said to be consumed by "the hollow feeling that comes from destroying one's own creations". Despite being complete opposites, Master Hand and Crazy Hand work together flawlessly in battle. Crazy Hand is particularly known for his bizarre and unearthly-looking attacks, such as crawling across the stage on all his fingers and writhing around on the ground wildly.

Within Classic Mode, Crazy Hand will appear to aid Master Hand after Master Hand has been weakened under certain conditions in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Crazy Hand will appear if the player reaches Master Hand's stage in less than 15 minutes without continuing on Normal in higher in Melee, or in Brawl by reaching Master Hand's stage in 9 minutes or less or on a difficulty of Hard or higher. Master Hand and Crazy Hand also must be battled in "Event Match 50: Final Destination Match" in Melee, which is different from the usual Classic Mode battle, because both the player fights both hands from the beginning. Finally, Crazy Hand is also an enemy in Brawls Boss Battles mode, which is the is the first instance where Crazy Hand can be battled without Master Hand.

3DS/Wii U
+
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, Crazy Hand's appearance in Classic Mode is altered. When playing on Intensity Level 3.0 or higher, the player will able to choose via a fork in the road whether to fight just Master Hand or to fight both of the Hands. With the latter option, Master Hand and Crazy Hand are both present at the beginning of the fight, and they have a shared life meter. They also have some new combination attacks in this installment. When playing on intensity levels 5.0 or higher, any battle with both of them will be cut short, as after taking a certain amount of damage, Crazy Hand will leave while Master Hand is ripped open and Master Core emerges to take their place as the final boss.

In the Wii U version of Smash Bros., Crazy Hand also appears to host the Crazy Orders mode and to act as its boss. In that mode, the player must complete a series of orders to earn prizes, and when leaving, the player must defeat Crazy Hand in a battle to keep the prizes and earn more rewards.

Ultimate
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, each playable fighter has a customized route through Classic Mode that ends in a boss fight or an alternative to a boss fight. Depending on the character in question, a route may end with battling a different boss than Master Hand or Crazy Hand. There are also routes in which Crazy Hand is the assigned boss. In routes where Master Hand or Crazy Hand is the assigned boss, the two of them will appear together for a joint battle when playing on difficulty levels of 7.0 or higher.

Crazy Hand also has a role as a recurring boss in the Adventure Mode of Ultimate, "The World of Light". In this, Dharkon is shown to have taken control of Crazy Hand and to have acquired an army of them. The player has to fight Crazy Hand several times while navigating The Dark Realm, and then two more times in the dimension known as The Final Battle. If the player manages to maintain the balance between light and dark, then Crazy Hand will be freed from Dharkon's control after being defeated the last time. The Hands would then work together to open the way to the final battle with Galeem and Dharkon for the fighters.
