Chunky Kong is one of the Kong characters who was introduced and featured as one of the playable characters in Donkey Kong 64. He is shown as a powerhouse of the Kongs and the older brother of Kiddy Kong, and he is known for being timid despite his strength.

Background[edit]

In one of Funky's minigames in the Game Boy Advance remake of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie's Double Trouble, Chunky was shown among the Kongs who were taken hostage. Dixie Kong and Kiddy were able to rescue them.

Chunky Kong was later captured by K. Rool in Donkey Kong 64 along with three other Kongs. Chunky was held in a cage in the Frantic Factory and was the last of the Kongs to be rescued. Afterwards, he lent his great strength into helping Donkey Kong to save the Golden Bananas and defeat K. Rool, but with some reluctance given his cowardly demeanor.

Like the other Kongs in the game, Chunky had his own personal boss battle against the giant dragonfly named Dogadon. Although Chunky was scared stiff of the monster, he was able to overcome his fear and pound Dogadon into submission with the aid of his Hunky Chunky technique. Chunky later was the last Kong to battle K. Rool in the last phase of the final battle, and he succeeded in delivering the K.O. to the K. Rool.

Abilities[edit]

Chunky is the strongest of the Kongs shown in Donkey Kong 64. However, his great size also impairs his speed, and he cannot jump as high as the others. The individual moves Chunky learns throughout the game are:

  • Primate Punch - A powerful punch that can knock most enemies off their feet, press buttons and destroy obstacles. Chunky first spends a second winding up the punch, similar to a move later used by Donkey Kong in the Super Smash Bros. games.
  • Gorilla Gone - Allows Chunky to temporarily turn invisible and see invisible objects with the aid of a special Chunky Kong pad.
  • Hunky Chunky - After entering a Chunky barrel, Chunky will turn to giant size. It is useful for taking on large enemies or getting to out-of-reach areas. This move consumes Crystal Coconuts.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

Trivia[edit]

  • His personal instrument in Donkey Kong 64 is the triangle, and his weapon is the Pineapple Launcher. He is also associated with the color green.
  • He is the only one of the Kongs introduced in Donkey Kong 64 to have not made a prominent appearance outside of that game, aside from his cameo appearance in Donkey Kong Country 3. The other two Kongs introduced in 64 were featured in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast and received their own trophies in Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, while Chunky was only represented through a sticker in Brawl.
