In Paper Mario: Color Splash, Bowser went to Prism Island to attempt to paint his shell a rainbow color, only to unwittingly get himself possessed by some evil black paint instead. This transformed him into Black Bowser, and in this form he attacked Port Prisma and scattered the Big Paint Stars in order to drain the island of its color. Black Bowser later captured Peach and drained her of her color. Eventually, Mario found Black Bowser at his castle and battled him. He briefly drained the black paint from him, revealing that Bowser had no idea what was going on, but the black paint regained control, and Black Bowser became larger to try to destroy Mario. Mario and Huey worked together to drain Black Bowser of paint for good, restoring Bowser to normal, with no recollection of what had happened while he was possessed. The clueless Bowser left the island on an airship with the Koopalings, only for it to be accidentally shot down by a celebratory firework.

Bowser also appeared as the main antagonist of Super Mario Run, where he had kidnapped Peach once again. At the end of three of the six worlds in World Tour Mode, as well as at the end of various areas of Remix 30, Bowser was battled in a manner similar to the original Super Mario Bros. battle, but in each of those battles Bowser turned out to be one of his underlings in disguise. The real Bowser battled the player's character at World 6-4 as the final boss of the game (not counting World-Star), where he rode in the Koopa Clown Car within his castle. He attempted to throw bob-ombs, spit fire shoot out spiked balls, and he was defeated by throwing three of his bob-ombs back at him.
