Bartre is a playable unit in both ''[[Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsuguri]]'' and ''[[Fire Emblem (game)|Fire Emblem]]''. He is known for his love of battling and is a bit slow mentally, but his heart was in the right place.

=Background=

At one point Bartre traveled around the world in search of powerful opponents. He eventually met one very powerful fighter, [[Karla]] the Sword Princess, at an arena in the Western Isles. She knocked him out in one blow, causing him to suffer defeat for the first time in his life. Bartre later worked as a mercenary with [[Pherae]] alongside his calmer friend, [[Dorcas]]. The two joined with [[Eliwood]]'s group in ''Taking Leave'' (Eliwood Chapter 11). Dorcas and Bartre originally joined up with Eliwood's group to help Eliwood fight off bandits, and they stayed with Eliwood for the rest of his journey. Latter on in "Battle Preparations" (Hector Chapter 31x), he was reunited with Karla by the Arena in Ostia. They battled again, and after Bartre held his own for own round, Karla noted he had improved and called off the battle. She decided to travel with Eliwood's group as well, and Bartre was determined to beat her, declaring her his arch rival.

Despite Bartre declaring her his enemy, the two later fell in love. Several years later, Bartre and Karla had a daughter together, [[Fir]]. However, their constant training them to neglect Fir as a young girl. Sadly, Karla later fell sick. At this point, Karla began telling him about her background and family. Bartre also met her brother [[Karel]] around that point, but he left the two of them without saying a word. He reminded Bartre of Karla when he first met her in his dangerous and forbidding stature, but he did not think badly of Karel due to Karla telling Bartre about the times the two siblings had experienced as children. Karla eventually passed away from her illness.

Fir later left home in order to travel and train the way of the sword. Bartre thought it was because of how little time he spent with her, so journeyed out in pursuit of her in order to make up for lost time. In ''Fuuin no Tsurugi'', Bartre traveled to the Western Isles in search of Fir. He only appeared in the "Escape to Freedom" version of Chapter 11. He had joined up with several of the island's rebels. Fir soon found him and told him that she was traveling and training to become a swordmaster like her mother. Bartre did not wish to drag her home, but he wanted to support her, so he joined [[Roy]]'s army alongside Fir. Bartre traveled with the army until the war's end and could be used to recruit Karel, whom had grown friendlier over time, later on.

After the war was over, Bartre returned to his home and opened up a small bar. The customers were drawn in by the stories he told about his valor in all his battles, as well as his jolly personality and his cooking abilities.

*'''[[Canas]]-''' In the first conversation, Bartre summons Canas and asks him if he is one of those magic users. Canas tries to explain the dark arts to Bartre, but Canas's sophisticated speech gives Bartre a headache (particularly the "hard words" he uses), so Bartre decides to punch a rock until his head feels better. In the second conversation, Bartre sees Canas reading a book and asks him if its one of the books that helps him to kill people. But Canas says its just a normal book that he reads for the thrill of new knowledge. Bartre manages to relate to it by saying its like how he eats all he can after a battle. In the final Support conversation, Bartre finds Canas exhausted and says that it is because all his reading must have made his body weak. Bartre then volunteers to train Canas to be stronger, and in exchange he asks Canas to lend him a skinny book (to read, not to eat as Canas first presumes). Bartre says that it is so the two can help each other along their different paths.
*'''Dorcas-''' In the first conversation, Bartre attempts to challenge Dorcas to another sparring match, but Dorcas is uninterested and is willing to let Bartre declare a victory on his behalf. In the second conversation, Bartre sees Dorcas drawing a picture of Natalie and sees how troubled he is over his wife's sickness. Bartre decides to ask Eliwood for a raise to help Dorcas in his cause and beat up Eliwood if he refused, although Dorcas did not approve of the plan. In the third conversation, Bartre returned from his meeting with Eliwood. He was unable to get the raise and said that Eliwood had remained calm while giving him some excuse containing many words Bartre didn't understand. Dorcas told Bartre that he was a fool, but a well-meaning fool, with his heart in the right place.
*'''Karla-''' In the first conversation, Bartre challenges Karla to battle, but she says it's not the right time and Eliwood has forbidden them from fighting amongst themselves. Bartre has her agree to fight him after the current battle's end. In the next conversation, Bartre has lost his latest battle but wants to fight again. He accuses Karla of fighting back and wants to battle her untamed. Karla says he would die, but Bartre says that he is willing to die to hone his skill. Karla is interested by this and promises to bring out all of her skills next time. In the final conversation, Karla sees that Bartre has improved, and Bartre says they both should work towards becoming stronger. Karla says she could help him improve, but Bartre refuses and tells her to stop bragging because they were the same, but Karla reminds him that they're not exactly the same because Karla's a woman. Bartre admits that when they first met in battle he saw her as a beautiful girl, but then after his defeat he saw her as a powerful fighter and forgot she was a woman. Karla is actually amused by this and tells Bartre he is a good man, and she decides to train harder to live up to his expectations. Bartre wonders why he is saying stupid things and comes to the horrible realization that he has fallen in love with her.
*'''[[Raven]]-''' In the first Support conversation, Bartre recognizes Raven as a fellow warrior and attempts to spar with him, but Raven constantly dodges his attacks. In the second conversation, Bartre tries communicating with Raven through words rather then fists. Suggesting they get to know each other, Bartre shows Raven a family tree he wrote up. Raven criticized his handwriting and Bartre says it is because he rushed the family tree, so Raven asks him to rewrite it and take all the time he needs to do so. Bartre then asks Raven to give him handwriting lessons, much to Raven's dismay. In the third conversation, Bartre again approaches Raven, oblivious to Raven's attempts to ignore him and calls Raven his friend. After saying that he'd have to wait until going home to finish his family tree (Raven encouraging him to go home immediately), Bartre tries challenging Raven to combat again. But Raven says that since they're friends, friends know each other's levels and do not need to fight. Bartre buys this and is about to return to his post when he realizes he doesn't know Raven's name.
*'''[[Renault]]-''' In the first conversation, Bartre confronts Renault and challenges him to a match, claiming that he saw him as a strong warrior and had a good sense for strong warriors, but he also admitted he was right nearly half of the time. In the second conversation, Renault asks Bartre why he seeks power. This causes Bartre to howl in pain because difficult conversations hurt his head. Renault asks him his dream, but Bartre says that he only seeks to be strong. Renault is amused and agrees to spar with Bartre. In the final conversation, Renault had not held up to his promise due to all the fighting surrounding them. Bartre angrily orders Renault to punch him as hard as he can in the face. Renault reluctantly complies, only to hit Bartre in the eye and knock him out. Having to punch and heal Bartre greatly tries Renault's nerves.

*'''[[Cath]]-''' Cath introduces herself to Bartre and tells him he reminds her of his father. She then asks him to give him a hug, but she picks his pockets in the meantime. In the next conversation Cath returns the stuff she stole to Bartre and confesses. She says was not sure why she did it since she usually only steals from the rich. Bartre asks if it has to do with her father, at which point Cath confirms it by saying she always hated her father for being a coward. In the final conversation, Cath mentions how instead of standing up to Bern forces, her father burned down their entire village when the Bern forces drew their weapons. Bartre tells Cath that her father was not a coward, but he did that to protect her. Cath does not believe this, but she admits that it is nice to think of it that.
*'''Fir-''' Bartre catches up to Fir and wants to spend quality time with her, but Fir leaves to do an errand for Roy and tells Bartre not to accompany her because she will have to do things on her own for it to be training. In the second conversation, Bartre confronts Fir after hearing rumors that she was seeing a man in the army and threatened to crush any bad influences, but Fir assured him that the man was only helping her train. Bartre is eager to train with Fir instead, but she tells him she need to train with a fellow sword wielder. In the final conversation, Bartre once more calls out for Fir but she is annoyed and says she does not need his overprotection. Bartre tells Fir he was only trying to make up for lost time and says she grew up to become a great woman without any thanks to him, and he only wants to help her in any way he could. Fir remind Bartre that he was always kind, loving and comforting to her whenever she was troubled. Bartre starts to cry, much to Fir's embarrassment.
*'''[[Gonzalez]]-''' Bartre recognizes Gonzalez from tales he heard in the Western Isles, and Gonzalez asks Bartre to train him because he feels useless. Bartre starts by provoking Gonzalez into hitting him as hard as he can. In the second conversation, Gonzales had earned some money thanks to his training and used it to buy armor. But Bartre chastises him for this, and says that only weaklings wear armor because true warriors take their enemies out in one blow. Gonzalez then decides to buy a strong axe, but Bartre attacks him again and says that a strong axe does not make on strong, but strong muscles do. In the final conversation, Bartre gives Gonzalez no chance to speak as he says that he can tell Gonzalez has become much stronger from looking him in the eyes and tells him that the path to becoming a true warrior is long and hard, and he invites Gonzalez to join him on that road.
*'''Karel-''' Bartre apologizes for not being able to save Karla, but Karel admits his sister's health was always in bad condition, and he was glad she lasted as long as she did. He is concerned that Fir lost her mother at such a young age, and when Bartre says Fir traveled around the continent training to be a great swordmaster, Karel seemed interested. In the second conversation, Bartre reminisces about his first meeting with Karla, and Karel tells him about the culture of his family and their obsession with the sword. Bartre mentions her smiling at him during one of their early encounters, and Karel said Karla rarely smiled so she must have really liked him. Then in the third conversation, they talk about Karla's time she spent bedridden prior to her death and Karel's brief visit. Bartre told Karel he had reminded her of Karla when he first met her - dangerous yet forbidding. Karel thinks Bartre thought of him as a terrible brother after their first meeting, but Bartre says it was not so because in her last days, Karla spoke of her childhood with Karel over and over again with a smile on her face.
*'''[[Zeiss]]-''' Bartre is impressed to meet a wyvern rider and tries to pet Zeiss's wyvern, although it starts to attack him. Bartre compliments Zeiss for his skill, even though Zeiss insists that most wyvern riders can tame wyverns. Later on, Bartre tells Zeiss about his disappointment in how slow the modern fighters are becoming and expresses the need for hard training before going into talks about his daughter, while Zeiss pretends to be interested. In the final conversation, Bartre compliments Zeiss on his progress and they both feel able to unleash their full strength while fighting alongside each other. Bartre compares Zeiss to the son he never had and says he is a perfect match for his daughter, then invites Zeiss to think of him as his father and tell him anything.
