Kakuna are common in Red and FireRed but uncommon in Blue and LeafGreen.

In Silver and SoulSilver, Kakuna are found in Routes 2, 30 and 31, Ilex Forest and National Park. In SoulSilver they also appear in Viridian Forest and can be found by headbutting trees. In Gold and HeartGold they can only be caught at the Bug-Catching Contest. In Crystal, Kakuna appear at Ilex Forest and the Bug-Catching Contest only.

Kakuna can be acquired by using the Dongle method in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, as they appear in Eterna Forest when a LeafGreen cartridge is in the GBA slot. In Black, it is uncommonly found at Route 12.
