Vespiquen evolves from female Combee at Level 21. There is only one Vespiquen per colony. Its abdomen is a honeycomb within which grubs are raised. Vespiquen use the honey collected by their Combee drones to raise the grubs, and they also release various pheromones to make the grubs obey them while in battle. The grubs strike back at enemies when Vespiquen is endangered.

In most games, Vespiquen could be obtained primarily by evolving a Combee. In Pokémon: Black and White Versions, they had a rare chance of appearing in rustling grass at Route 12.

In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it appeared at Chroma Road. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was found at Sophian Road, Dark Temple and Odd Temple. Vespiquen also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at the Silent Forest.

*In the Pokémon anime, Vespiquen was first featured in an episode of the Sinnoh series where it controlled a colony of Combee at the hidden Amber Castle, where Cheryl made peace with them to collect some honey. Aaron was also shown using his own Vespiquen in a later episode, and other Vespiquen have made occasional small appearances.

*In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a Vespiquen was only shown in the Diamond/Pearl arc being used by a Cue Ball who acted as a minor antagonist, being paired with another Cue Ball who used Mothim. They battled Diamond and Riley and were defeated.

Trivia
*Its name is a combination of "vespa" (which is the Latin name for wasps) and a play on "queen".
