Turtwig is a turtle-like Pokémon that was introduced in the fourth generation games as the starter Pokémon for Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Versions and as the first Pokémon in the Sinnoh Pokédex. It is the first in a three-stage evolutionary line, with its evolved forms being Grotle and Torterra.

Turtwig resembles a small turtle with a plant growing from its head. Its shell is actually made of soil and hardens when Turtwig drinks water. For that reason, Turtwig usually live near lakes. The shell will usually feel moist on a healthy Turtwig. They undertake photosynthesis with their bodies in order to make oxygen. The leaf atop Turtwig's head will wilt if it gets thirsty.

It evolves into Grotle at Level 18.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Turtwig was available as one of the starter Pokémon which the player could possibly be turned into at the beginning of the game depending on the results of their personality quiz, and other Turtwig could be recruited at the first thirteen basement floors of Mystifying Forest and the first twenty-nine basement floors of Mystery Jungle. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it appeared at Habiki Beach. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was found at Hinder Cape. In Pokémon Rumble, it was found at Silent Forest. Turtwig also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Meadow Zone.

*In the Pokémon anime, Ash caught a Turtwig that had broken up fights amongst wild Pokémon early in the Sinnoh series. It had a penchant for clamping onto things with its jaws, including Ash, but it proved to be useful in battle and aided in most of his gym battles before evolving into Grotle about halfway into the Sinnoh series during a battle with Paul. Gardenia also used a Turtwig during her gym battle with Ash, and Paul was shown to have had a Turtwig as his starter Pokémon which evolved. Other Turtwig have made primarily minor appearances, such as ones belonging to other trainers or the ones which Professor Rowan owned.

*In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Professor Rowan supplied a Turtwig and a Chimchar to be used by Platina's bodyguards at the beginning of the Diamond/Pearl arc. A mix-up led them all to believe the Diamond and Pearl were the actual bodyguards, and the Turtwig chose Diamond as its master. The Turtwig, Chimchar and Piplup later trained together at Eterna City to prepare Platina for her second gym challenge, and all three of the Pokémon evolved into their second forms at the same time.

Trivia
*Its name is a combination of "turtle" and "twig".

*A trophy of Turtwig appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
