In his youth, Nolan was a successful merchant, until he was betrayed by his associates, which led to him losing his fortune and status. He was left disillusioned in mankind and began living as a tramp in the back alleys of Nevassa. Although he had considered the Mad King's War to be none of his business, the injustices committed to his fellow countrymen by the Begnion Occupational Army gave him reason to care.

Nolan was one of the members of the [[Dawn Brigade]]. Like the other members, he was determined to restoring Daein's power after it had been overrun by the corrupt officials of the Begnion Occupational Army. He was the oldest member of the Dawn Brigade and so was a teacher to the other members, who were young and inexperienced. Little is said of his past except that he has "experience living in the shadows" which had made him into a shrewd and cautious warrior unlikely to make mistakes. He also seemed to be an avid reader blaming his desire for knowledge on human nature.

Inspired by a desire to save his people, he began fighting to hinder the Occupational Army's efforts, which led him to meeting with [[Edward]] and [[Leonardo]] after saving them and recruiting them to his cause. After meeting [[Sothe]] and [[Micaiah]], the rebels formed the [[Dawn Brigade]] together with Nolan as the leader and senior member. He also acted as a teacher to the other members of the Dawn Brigade, who were young and inexperienced in combat. His "experience living in the shadows" had made him into a shrewd and cautious warrior unlikely to make mistakes. He also seemed to be an avid reader blaming his desire for knowledge on human nature.

He was first seen in "Chapter 1: Maiden of Miracles", when he arrived late to a meeting of the Dawn Brigade because of the increased presence of Begnion officers looking for the Dawn Brigade in the area. He then led [[Micaiah]], [[Edward]] and [[Leonardo]] in retreating from Nevassa, at least until the heat died down. Nolan participated in all of the following battles alongside the Dawn Brigade and Daein Liberation Army except for "Chapter 9: One Survives". In "Chapter 5: The Lost Heir", he gave advice to Edward and Leonardo, as he told them not to let go of their dreams but also warned them against getting overconfident. He then seemed slightly depressed when Leonardo called him old. After Daein won the battle for independence, he remained part of the Daein Royal Army.

The army was later mobilized to attack the retreating Laguz Alliance army in "Chapter 6: A Reason to Fight" of "Part 3: Intersecting Vows". In the Base Conversation, Micaiah brought him Tavros, an axe that was one of Daein's national treasures and sent by [[Pelleas]]. He then attempted to comfort Micaiah about fighting a war that she did not believe in and reminded her that the Dawn Brigade was her family, not just her friends, so they would help her if she needed them no matter what. In another Base Conversation of "Chapter 13: Blood Contract", [[Sothe]] gave him a Tomahawk to use in battle. Nolan noticed that Sothe seemed very troubled as if he wanted to tell Nolan something, so Nolan advised him to take some time to think about it first and come back to him later.

After the war ended, Nolan left the military and traveled across [[Tellius]], saving those who were in trouble. Stories were told of his altruism that later became legends.
