Leonardo was born to a Daein noble. He attended a military school, with his composure and maturity seemingly coming from his good upbringing. However, his father and brother died in the Mad King's War with his mother dying soon after, leaving him orphaned. Things only got worse from Leonardo when the Begnion Occupation Army took over his school and sent its inhabitants to prison camps. Leonardo was able to escape with several of his colleagues, but all save for Leonardo were captured along the way.

Leonardo was a young novice archer who served as a member of the [[Dawn Brigade]]. Like other members of the Brigade, he was a Daein citizen who sought an end to the injustices in Daein caused by the Begnion Occupational Army. It was suggested that he had a good upbringing due to his composure and maturity. Leonardo possessed a strong sense of responsibility that he attempted to rub off onto his more reckless comrade [[Edward]], although Edward thought Leonardo nagged too much and wanted him to lighten up.

Leonardo himself was later cornered by the Occupational Army in the alleys of Nevassa, where he was saved by [[Edward]]. The two boys formed an alliance and grew to become best friends, with Leonardo initially agreeing to teach Edward about combat in exchange for Edward teaching Leonardo how to live in the underworld and evade his pursuers. He often attempted to rub off his strong sense of responsibility onto the more reckless Edward, but Edward thought Leonardo nagged too much and wanted him to lighten up. The two were later saved by [[Nolan]], which led to them banding together with [[Sothe]] and [[Micaiah]] to rebel against the Begnion Occupational Army as the [[Dawn Brigade]].

He first was seen in "Prologue: Under Gray Skies" of "Part 1: Silver-Haired Maiden". He had been late to a meeting with [[Micaiah]] and Edward, but Yune was able to bring him to their battle with a group of bandits, arriving at the end of the third turn. He joined the Dawn Brigade and Daein Liberation Army in all of their battles in the ensuing chapters save for "Chapter 9: One Survives". In the Base Conversation of "Chapter 5: The Lost Heir", he looked down on Edward's outrageous dreams and ambitions and badmouthed them until [[Nolan]] instructed them to hold onto their dreams. After Daein's battle with Begnion came to an end, Leonardo became part of the Daein Royal Army.

The Royal Army was later called into action again to halt the retreat of the Laguz Alliance Army in "Chapter 6: A Reason to Fight" of "Part 3: Intersecting Vows". In that chapter's Base Conversation, Micaiah gave Leonardo the bow Lughnasadh, which was a national treasure of Daein, to wield in battle. Leonardo was impressed by the bow and saw that they had to win now. He comforted Micaiah by telling her that she was not responsible for the war, and they were doing the best that they could. He assured her that he was fighting for Daein regardless of the circumstances. Then later on in "Chapter 13: Blood Contract", he was depressed by the string of wars they had been pulled into but supported Edward's farfetched plan of leaving the army in the following battle in hopes that the others would follow their example and leave until no soldiers were left to fight. But he told Edward they should first focus on fighting their next battle and gave him a Tempest Blade that he had bought with some money from Micaiah, saying that they were each other's best friend and family.
