Hypno evolves from Drowzee at Level 26. It is a master hypnotist and carries around a pendulum which it uses to put people to sleep. It causes drowsiness in anyone nearby. Hypno puts people to sleep when it is hungry and feeds on their dreams, and the longer it swings its pendulum, the longer the hypnosis lasts. It polishes its pendulum while searching for prey. Hypno's pendulum could put someone to sleep in just three seconds, even if the person just woke up.

When it locks eyes with someone, Hypno will usually use a combination of PSI moves such as Hypnosis and Confusion. They are shady Pokémon, and apparently there was an incident where one kidnapped a child that it had hypnotized.

In Pokémon Pinball as well as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Hypno could only be obtained by evolving Drowzee. A Hypno appeared in Pokémon Puzzle League as part of Sabrina's three-Pokémon team. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Hypno could be snagged from Cipher Admin Gorigan at Cipher Key Lair. After being purified, this Hypno could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Huge Storage 2 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Ranger, it appeared at Dusk Factory.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Hypno could be recruited at the sixth through ninth basement floors of Deep Spacial Rift. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Chroma Ruins and Altru Building. Hypno also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Eternal Tower.

*Hypno was featured in an episode of the Pokémon anime where it belonged to members of the Pokémon Lover's Club. They used it to help them sleep, but the "Sleep Waves" it set off caused children to think they were Pokémon and drained energy from Pokémon at Pokémon Centers. Ash and his friends were able to use the club's Drowzee to undo this damage. Hypno was also shown as one of Harrison's Pokémon during the Silver Conference, where it beat Ash's Totodile but lost against his Snorlax.

*In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Hypno made a brief appearance as one of the Pokémon belonging to Al of the Team Rocket Elite Trio during the Yellow arc. Hypno used its Meditate to help the trio escape the sinking SS Anne, but they all fell into the water when they had it use Pound.

Trivia
*Its name is derived from "hypnosis".

*Drowzee and Hypno are based on the Baku, a Japanese mythological tapir-like creature that eats people's dreams and nightmares. This connection is acknowledged in one of Drowzee's Pokédex entries. The fifth generation would later introduce Munna and Musharna, which are also dream-eating creatures based on the Baku.
