Grotle is a foliage-covered tortoise-like Pokémon that was introduced in the the fourth generation games. It is the middle form of Turtwig's evolutionary line and evolves into Torterra.

Turtwig evolves into Grotle at Level 16. As with its earlier form, its shell is made out of hardened soil, which is apparently fertile enough for small bushy trees to grow there. It lives near water in the forest and is said to know where pure water swells up, so that Grotle usually has its own secret springwater. Grotle leaves the forest in the daytime to sunbathe its treed shell. Some Pokémon come to peck the berries which grow on the small trees on its back, and it will often carry fellow Pokémon on its back.

Grotle evolves into Torterra at Level 32.

Grotle has not been found in the wild and can only be obtained by evolving a Turtwig.

*In the Pokémon anime, Ash's Turtwig evolved into a Grotle about halfway through the Sinnoh series during a battle with Paul. It at first suffered due to being slower, which made it more clumsy, but Paul's Torterra secretly met with it to help it cope with these new drawbacks. The Grotle became a stronger fighter, particularly when using the special technique of swallowing its own Energy Ball which wound up increasing its power, and it eventually evolved into Torterra while fighting off Team Rocket at Sunyshore City.

*In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Diamond's Turtwig evolved into a Torterra at the same time that Platina's Piplup and Pearl's Chimchar evolved while the three were training together at Eterna City, which was proof of the three trainer's bonds. Grotle became stronger but was not used much in battle before it evolved into Torterra while fighting off massive amounts of Team Galactic grunts alongside Platina's real bodyguards at Veilstone City.

Trivia
*Its name is a combination of "grow" (due to the plant life growing on its back) with "turtle".
