'''Caterpie''' is a small Bug-type Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the first in a three-stage evolutionary line, with its evolved forms being [[Metapod]] and [[Butterfree]]. It also has a foil in the form of [[Weedle]].

=Information=

Caterpie is a small Pokémon that resembles a caterpillar. It has short feet that are tipped with suction pads for use in climbing slopes and walls. Caterpie often climb trees to forage for food. They are known for their great appetite and are capable of devouring leaves bigger than its body. It also has a variety of defense mechanisms to compensate for its size; for one, the antenna-like feeler on its head can release a horrible odor when the Caterpie feels threatened. It also has large, eye-like patterns on its head for use in scaring enemies away and can often camouflages itself among leaves that are the same color as its body.

Caterpie grow through repeated molting, and they will evolve into Metapod early at Level 7, followed by the final form of Butterfree at Level 10.

Among ''[[Pokémon: Red, Green and Blue Versions|Pokémon Red, Blue]]'', ''[[Pokémon: Yellow Version|Yellow]]'', ''[[Pokémon: FireRed and LeafGreen Versions|FireRed and LeafGreen]]'', the only place where Caterpie can be caught in all of these games is the Viridian Forest. In ''Red'', ''Blue'', ''FireRed'' and ''LeafGreen'', Caterpie are also found in Route 25; while in ''Blue'', ''FireRed'' and ''LeafGreen'' Caterpie are also found in Routes 2 and 24. In ''FireRed'' and ''LeafGreen'', Caterpie can also be found in the Pattern Bush. They are uncommon in ''Red'' but common in the other first generation games.

In ''[[Pokémon: Gold and Silver Versions|Gold]]'' and ''[[Pokémon: Crystal Version|Crystal]]'', Caterpie can be commonly found on Routes 2, 30 and 31 as well as in the Ilex Forest and National Park. They can also be found by headbutting trees at Ilex Forest, Azalea Town, the Lake of Rage, Route 26, Route 27, 34, 36, 36, 37, 38 and 39 in ''Gold', and  on Routes 24 and 25 as well as by headbutting trees on Routes 44, 45 and 46 in ''Crystal''. In ''Silver'', they are uncommon and can only be obtained at the National Park's Bug-Catching Contest.

In ''[[Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl Versions|Diamond, Pearl]]'' and ''[[Pokémon: Platinum Version|Platinum]]'', Caterpie are found in the southern area of Route 210 when ''FireRed'' is inserted, and in ''Platinum'' they can additionally be found in the northern area of Route 210 and Eterna Forest under the same conditions.

In ''[[Hey You, Pikachu!]]'', one of [[Pikachu]]'s tasks is taking care of from one to five baby Caterpie, which involves feeding them bloomed roses until they evolve into Metapod, with Pikachu being rewarded by fully grown Butterfree. Caterpie also appears in ''[[Pokémon Stadium]]'', ''[[Pokémon Stadium 2]]'', ''[[Pokémon Colosseum]]'' and ''[[Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness]]''.

In ''[[Pokémon Channel]]'', Caterpie can be found in the Viridan Forest on clear nights. In ''[[Pokémon Trozei!]]'', Caterpie are found in Phobos Train, Endless Battle 9, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den. *Caterpie appears in the Pokémon anime, where it is the first wild Pokémon that [[Red#Other Media|Ash Ketchum]] catches and evolves into a Metapod within the same episode. Another episode during the Hoenn series involves a Caterpie that transforms into a giant after accidentally eating Rare Candies. Various other Caterpie have made primarily minor appearances throughout the series.
*In the ''Pokémon Adventures'' manga, several Caterpie initially made minor appearances in the ''Red''/''Green''/''Blue'' arc, including one being shown amongst the Pokémon that escape from [[Professor Oak]]. During the ''Yellow'' arc, a Caterpie began following Yellow after she saved it from the fire of [[Blaine]]'s [[Growlithe]] and became part of her team. Yellow kept Caterpie from evolving with the Pokédex for most of the arc, but they all evolved during the arc's final battle against [[Lance (Pokemon)|Lance]], with the Caterpie quickly evolving into Metapod and then Butterfree.
*In ''The Electric Tale of Pikachu'' manga, Ash caught a Caterpie early on similar to the anime, except that in this version Caterpie was the second wild Pokémon caught by Ash following a [[Fearow]].
