Bellsprout is a carnivorous Pokémon that uses its bell-shaped mouth to trap and eat bugs, often using their arm-like vines. It also has root feet which it uses to absorb moisture by "planting" them in the ground. However, it is left vulnerable and immobile while it is "rooted" in the ground. They prefer hot and humid environments. It has an extraordinarily thin body, but is unusually fast when it comes to catching prey and immediately swings its vine at opponents.

Its flexible body also allows it to bend to dodge most attacks. It leaks a fluid from its mouth that melts even iron. Its bud resembles a human face, which had lead to rumors that it is a type of legendary mandrake plant. Bellsprout will evolve into Weepinbell at Level 28.

*Bellsprout have made various appearances throughout the Pokémon anime series. One round of the Indigo League pitted Ash against a trainer with an unusually strong Bellsprout that defeated his Pikachu and Bulbasaur, but it was eventually defeated by his Muk. A Johto episode set at Sprout Tower also focused on a boy's disappointment when he caught a Bellsprout when he was trying to catch Ash's Pikachu, but the Bellsprout was ultimately able to prove itself by defeating Team Rocket.

*In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Bellsprout was briefly shown among the various extra Pokémon that Ash had captured, and Erika was later shown briefly using one. During the Gold/Silver chapter set at Sprout Tower, a group of monks attacked Gold with their Bellsprout in an attempt to force him into their ranks, but Gold ultimately was able to defeat them with his Cyndaquil.

Trivia
*Its name is a combination of "bell" (referring to the shape of its head) and "sprout" (which plays off of it being a plant).
