Debut Pokémon: Ruby/Sapphire Versions

Wally is a Pokémon trainer who appears in Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions as well as in the remakes Alpha Sapphire. He acts as a supporting character in the game and as a friendly rival character.

Background

Wally was a sickly boy who originally lived in Petalburg City with his parents. He always dreamed of owning his own Pokémon. Eventually it was decided that he would spend some time with relatives at Verdanturf City, where the cleaner air would help him. So he went to Petalburg City's Pokémon Gym and asked the gym leader Norman to help him catch a Pokémon. Norman lent him a Pokémon and sent his child Brendan/May to teach Wally how to catch a Pokémon. With the player character's guidance, Wally was able to catch his first Pokémon, a Ralts.

After moving to Verdanturf, Wally's health began to improve, due in part to the presence of Pokémon in his life.. At one point, he believed that he had become strong enough to challenge a Pokémon gym (despite still only possessing one Pokémon) and had his uncle bring him to the Mauville City gym. His uncle would not allow him to enter, however, because he did not think he was ready. Luckily, Brendan/May arrived at that time, and Wally challenged them in order to test himself. After being defeated, Wally willingly returned to Verdanturf until he became stronger.

Wally soon became genuinely stronger, both in terms of his health and his Pokémon team, and he began traveling with his Pokémon team. He confronted Brendan/May on Victory Road and challenged them with his improved team of Pokémon. Although he was defeated, again Wally swore he would catch up with the player trainer one day and could be rechallenged there endlessly, with a stronger team each time for the first four rematches.

In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, his story was expanded. He managed to collect all eight badges before challenging Brandan/May at Victory Road, and the Hoenn News Network reported his accomplishments. He also obtained a Mega Stone and Key Stone, which he used for Mega Evolving one of his Pokémon. During the Delta Episode, his Key Stone went missing, and despite this he was later accosted by either Courtney of Team Magma or Matt of Team Aqua (depending on the version) for it. Brendan/May came to his aid and later returned his Key Stone to him.

Norman also gave him an S.S. Ticket, so that he could travel to the Battle Resort and continue to improve as a trainer. There, he continued his training with the help of other trainers that he met and began to think more strategically. He also began to feel like he had found where he truly belonged. At the resort's Battle Maison, Wally was available as a teammate for Multi Battles, or he could be battled as an opponent.

Wally returned in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, set at least ten years later, as a competitor at the Battle Tree in the Alola Islands who could be battled and recruited.

Pokémon Roster

Norman initially lends him a Zigzagoon, which he returns after catching his first Pokémon. In the first battle at Mauville City, he uses only a Ralts (the same one he is shown catching earlier in the game). The following is his full team which he uses in the Victory Road battle and subsequent rematches:

In Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, when battling him at the Battle Maison, his team is the same as his Victory Road team for this versions, except that his Roselia and Magneton are replaced by a Roserade and Magnezone, respectively. For later Battle Maison battles, he uses the following roster:

When teaming up with the player at the Battle Maison, he uses his Gallade and Magnezone.

In Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, the pool of Pokémon that he draws from for battles at the Battle Tree include Altaria, Garchomp, Magnezone and Gallade.

In Other Pokémon Games

In Pokémon Masters, Wally and his Gallade appeared as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the game's sync pair feature. His Gallade could Mega Evolve when using a sync move during battle.

Other Appearances

Other Media

  • He appears in the Pokémon Adventures manga and plays a large role in the Ruby/Sapphire arc. In this version, Norman refuses to teach him how to be a trainer after learning about his condition, at which point Ruby takes over and lends him a Ralts while teaching him how to catch Pokémon. As Ruby is then lost in a river protecting a Pokémon, Wally holds onto his Ralts for him. Wally later becomes a stronger trainer and is shown to wear a special respirator suit. Norman eventually takes Wally in and uses him to help in awakening Rayquaza, which required someone of a child's size (a role that had been intended for Norman's son Ruby before his disappearance). He also temporarily holds the third starter Pokémon Treecko and a Pokédex that Professor Birch had lost. It evolves into a Grovyle before it is lost, but the Pokédex is returned to Birch, with both being meant for the new character Emerald (thus Wally acted as a temporary placeholder for him). Wally makes a return appearance in the Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire arc, where he gives an injured Sapphire shelter in his Secret Base and later helps with the effort to stop Grand Meteor Delta.

Trivia

  • His favorite Pokémon is simply described as the "first one [he] ever caught", meaning his Ralts.
  • In a new line of dialogue after the Mauville fight in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Wally seems to be in the process of asking Brendan/May if it is okay for him to call them his rival, only for him to nervously cut himself off and ask the trainer to forget about it.
  • He is the first rival character in the games who does not have any of that generation's starter Pokémon.
  • Wally keeps his Key Stone encased in a Mega Pendant that he wears.
  • His Galladie was given to him by Wanda, who discovered it and a Gardevoirite (which she later gave to Brenda/May) when light descended from the sky following the defeat of Groudon/Kyogre.
