The game is set in a forest that was once known as the [[Peaceful Woods]], said to be the home of sprites and other gentle creatures. [[Wario]] has taken over these woods and filled them with monsters to turn the place into Wario's Woods. Toad travels to the area and works with the sprites to try and defeat Wario.

The game has several modes. The standard mode is the Round Game mode, where the player goes through a hundred levels of escalating difficulty. That mode contains several boss battles and is where the game's story plays out. It is also divided into A and B modes. There is also Time Race, where players have to accomplish feats within a time limit  with three levels of difficulty.
