There was known to be at least one incarnation of the seven sages existing prior to Ocarina of Time (aside from the group that was mentioned in Tears of the Kingdom). Often referred to as the ancient sages, they were known to build the Temple of Time to close off the entrance to the Sacred Realm and protect the Triforce. One of their number was Rauru, who eventually confined himself to the Chamber of Sages within the Sacred Realm's Temple of Light. Rauru was the only known member of this incarnation, and not much is known about them, although they may be the same sages who later appeared in Twilight Princess.

The Shrine Maidens
They were identified as "shrine maidens" rather than sages, but this set of characters from Four Swords Adventures was unique due to the fact that they were based on the maidens from A Link to the Past combined with powers similar to the sages. There were six unnamed maidens, and they were led by Princess Zelda. The shrine maidens helped to maintain the seal on Vaati, which was upheld by the Four Sword. Each of the maidens had a specific color to their hair and magic which corresponded with the colors associated with the sages from Ocarina of Time. They could also transform into fairy-like creatures. Zelda and the shrine maidens were all captured by Dark Link and were held within various dungeons, where they were imprisoned within crystals. With the power of the Four Sword, the four Links were able to slowly rescue them all, and each shrine maiden would act as a guide in fairy form after being freed. At the end of the game, they were able to use their powers to seal Ganon within the Four Sword.

The Hero of Winds met Laruto and Fado's ghosts, and he was appointed to finding successors to both of them. They each taught Link a song that would awaken their successors to their destiny as a sage. The Rito girl Medli turned out to be Laruto's descendant and was brought to the Earth Temple to offer her prayers as the new Earth Sage. Link also found the Korok Makar (the game being less clear about whether they are related by blood, likely due to the unlikelihood of Kokiri reproducing) and brought him to the Wind Temple to act as the new Wind Sage. Each of them had instruments that were identical to the ones that Laruto and Fado had played. In Medli's case, it was implied to be the very same instrument passed down her family line. With their prayers, the Master Sword was energized for that Link's final battle with Ganondorf.  It is uncertain whether or not the sages continued to live and pray in their temples afterwards, considering that the Master Sword was then lost with Ganondorf's petrified body and that they were shown aboard Tetra's boat in the ending, although they were no longer traveling with her in Phantom Hourglass.

The Imprisoning War
In Tears of the Kingdom, it was shown that King Rauru assembled a group of sages to stand up against the Demon King Ganondorf. All of the sages wielded Zonai secret stones that amplified their powers. Ultimately, they could not stand up to Ganondorf's power, and Rauru sacrificed himself to seal the Demon King away. The remaining sages were tasked by Zelda with enshrining their secret stones so that one day their descendants could become sages and help Link fight Ganondorf upon his return.

Ancient Sages
*Ancient Rito Sage - Sage of Wind. A male Rito who was the ancestor of Teba and Tulin.

*Ancient Goron Sage - Sage of Fire. A male Goron who was the ancestor of Daruk and Yunobo.

*Ancient Zora Sage - Sage of Water. A female Zora who was the ancestor of Dorephan, Mipha and Sidon.

*Ancient Gerudo Sage - Sage of Lightning. A Gerudo who was the ancestor of Urbosa and Riju.

*Mineru - Sage of Spirit

*Princess Zelda - Sage of Time. The time-displaced Princess Zelda had inherited light and time powers from Rauru and Sonia, respectively, and she used a secret stone that was actually the future version of Rauru's own stone.

While not officially identified as a sage, King Rauru acted as their leader and used powers of light, akin to a Sage of Light. Prior to the formation of the sages, Queen Sonia also wielded a secret stone that enhanced her powers over time, but she was ultimately killed by Ganondorf, who stole her stone.

Tears of the Kingdom
During the events of Tears of the Kingdom, Link was tasked with helping to assemble a new group of sages to stand against the revived Ganondorf. Each sage had to be guided to their respective secret stone. Upon finding their stone, the new sage would receive a vision in which their ancestor communicated memories of the original battle against the Demon King Ganondorf, to inform them of their new purpose. Each sage formed a pact with Link, which allowed Link to summon their avatars, which were depicted as ghostly copies of the original sages. These avatars could fight alongside Link throughout his journey while the actual sages were preoccupied with their other duties, and each sage could be strengthened by collecting four Sage's Wills and presenting them to a Goddess Statue. After four of the sages were awakened, they showed up to help fight off Phantom Ganon and then went off to investigate the mystery of the fifth sage in their respective regions. After the awakening of the fifth sage, Mineru, the sages all showed up to help fight off Ganondorf's minions and Ganondorf himself, although they were all knocked down during the final battle against Demon King Ganondorf. After Ganondorf was defeated, Mineru passed on to the afterlife, while the remaining sages swore an oath to protect Princess Zelda.

The Five Sages
*Tulin - Sage of Wind

*Yunobo - Sage of Fire

*Sidon - Sage of Water

*Riju - Sage of Lightning

*Mineru - Sage of Spirit. The only sage to carry over from ancient times, as she was able to separate her spirit from her body and house it within the Purah Pad followed by a contruct.

It should also be noted that Link received the Recall ability from Zelda in a scene similar to those in which Link made pacts with the other sages, such that Link technically wields the power of the Sage of Time throughout the game, without being officially known as such.

*In Phantom Hourglass, a graveyard on the Isle of the Dead contains graves for six sages which reveal the path through the Phantom Corridor to the resting place of Brant of the Cobble Kingdom. They seem to be unrelated to Hyrule's sages.

*One notable continuity problem is that the maiden descendants of A Link to the Past are said to be blood descendants of the seven sages and are all Hylians, yet most of the sages that were shown in Ocarina are of different species (including ones that does not seem to be capable of individual reproduction, the Kokiri). This also applies to A Link Between Worlds to an extent, although one of the sages in that game is a Zora, and only some of this incarnation of the sages are explicitly said to be descendants of the original sages.
