Debut Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

The Yoshi Kid is a playable partner in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Describing him is, in itself, very difficult. He lacks any official name and his color is a complete variable depending on how you play. The only thing consistent about him is his personality and background, which ultimately, is all that matters.

Background[edit]

His egg was found and sold to a Hot Dog merchant in Glitzville to be a secret ingredient. Because of this, he is orphaned and has no way of knowing his parentage or origin. But before he could be cooked, he started shaking in his egg quite a bit - rather unusual for a hot dog ingredient. After bouncing around wildly for some time, Mario soon found and detained him. Not wanting to cook a living creature, the hot dog vendor gave him to Mario's care.

While Mario was busy battling as the 'Great Gonzales', the egg soon hatched. After a short introduction and him receiving a name from Mario, he decided to join Mario in his quest. His assistance proved instrumental in defeating the two Iron Cleft brothers. Afterwards, his eating and egg-related skills came in quite handy. Having been born in a fighting arena had a permanent effect on his personality, giving him a tough attitude and a somewhat sarcastic personality. Despite that, he still idolizes Mario (whom he still continues to call 'Great Gonzales').

After the end of their adventures, he returns to the fighting arena. According to Goombella, he's working his way to the top by himself with the name 'Great Gonzales Jr.'. Like the rest of Mario's partners, he returned to help Mario out when he continued some more questing in and around Rogueport.

Gameplay[edit]

Outside of battle, Mario can ride on Yoshi Kid's back. Yoshi Kid is somewhat faster than Mario and will also perform a flutter jump if the jump button is held. This allows Mario to cross gaps he couldn't jump himself.

In battle, Yoshi Kid has the following attacks:

  • Ground Pound - Yoshi Kid will flutter up to an enemy, then ground pound its head repeatedly.
  • Gulp - For 4 FP, Yoshi Kid can swallow the front enemy on the ground and spit it at the next enemy in line. This move is actually required for one fight.
  • Mini-Egg - For 3 FP, Yoshi Kid will throw eggs at the enemies that may shrink them for a few turns.
  • Stampede - For 6 FP, Yoshi Kid will summon a swarm of Yoshis who trample all enemies on the ground.

Yoshi Kid starts with 10 HP, but will progress to 20 and then 30 HP as his rank is raised.

Trivia[edit]

  • His color is dependent on the duration of time that passed between finding his egg and hatching him within a 20 minute cycle, as seen here: Green - 6 minutes, Red - 3 minutes, Blue - 2 minutes, Orange - 4 minutes, Pink - 3 minutes, Black - 1 minute, White - 1 minute.
  • The seven different color schemes for Yoshi Kid also have different hairstyles.
  • The Yoshi Kid has a Catch Card in Super Paper Mario, received after completing the Duel of 100 in Chapter 6. It can be sold for 364 coins.
    • #352 "It's Yoshi from the last Paper Mario adventure. This scrappy Yoshi was the only way to travel!"
  • He also appears as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
