Yoshi's New Island is a platforming adventure game for the Nintendo 3DS. It is a Yoshi spin-off of the Super Mario series and acts as a sequel to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. It technically acts as a midquel, as it is set directly after the original Yoshi's Island and takes place before the previously released sequel Yoshi's Island DS.

Story[edit]

This game retcons the ending of Yoshi's Island, in which Babies Mario and Luigi had been successfully delivered to their parents by the stork. It turns out that the babies had been brought to the wrong parents, so the stork retrieves them and starts a new journey to bring them to the correct parents. Along the way, Kamek makes another attempt to capture the babies. Once again, he only succeeded in grabbing Baby Luigi and the stork, while Baby Mario falls from the sky and is found by the Yoshis. The Yoshis carry Baby Mario and go on another quest against Kamek and Baby Bowser to rescue Baby Luigi.

Gameplay[edit]

The gameplay reprises the basic gameplay from Yoshi's Island, in which the player controls Yoshi in traveling through levels and protecting Baby Mario from being knocked off of him. The game features six different tranformations for Yoshi and also introduces special variations on Yoshi eggs known as Mega Eggdozers and Metal Eggdozers, which have special properties and can be helpful in clearing obstacles. There are also now underwater stages, in which Yoshi walks along the floor of aquatic areas. Several features are also available for players who have trouble clearing stages: Flutter Wings that can allow Yoshi to flutter indefinitely and Golden Flutter Wings, which also make Yoshi invincible.

Legacy[edit]

Sequels[edit]

The next Yoshi game would be Yoshi's Woolly World for the Wii U.
