Taillow is a young and courageous bird-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. Its evolved form is Swellow.
Taillow is a young Pokémon that has only just left its nest. They become lonesome and cry at night due to this. However, Taillow are also very scrappy Pokémon and are known to their foes despite the opponent's strength. It is even said to take on the larger Skarmory on even footing. They remain defiant even if they lose the battle. However, Taillow will lose strength and cry out if it becomes hungry. They constantly hunt for prey and usually feed on the Wurmple that live in forests.
Taillow also seek out warmer climates, and they migrate when cold seasons fall to travel to warmer lands. It can clock at 180 miles per day. At Level 22, it evolves into Swellow.
In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Taillow could be found commonly or uncommonly at Routes 104, 115 and 116, and they rarely appeared at Petalburg Woods. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it could only be found by headbutting a certain tree in Cherrygrove City.
In Pokémon Colosseum, a Taillow belonging to an old man in Agate Village had a minor role in bringing him berries on a daily basis. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, it was found at the Plains. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Secret Storage 3, Endless Level 19, Forever Level 19 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the second through fourth floors of Joyous Tower, and in Explorers of Time and Darkness it was recruitable at the first fifteen basement floors of Concealed Ruins and the first eight basement floors of World Abyss. In Pokémon Ranger, one Rookie Mission involved capturing a Taillow belonging to one of the citizens of Ring Town, and they were also found at Lyra Forest and East Road.
In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it could be caught at Ranger School, School Path, Vientown and Vien Forest. Taillow also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventures at the Beach Zone, the Iceberg Zone and the Granite Zone.
- In the Pokémon anime, an early episode of the Hoenn series pitted Ash's group against a group of Taillow that stole chocolate from Max and provoked Pikachu into a battle. The Taillow continued to attack and get hit by Pikachu's Thunderbolt until Ash caught it for its own safety. It was the first Pokémon Ash caught in Hoenn, and it proved to be useful in battle. Taillow evolved into Swellow during the last round of a PokéRinger tournament. In addition to other minor appearances, one of the specials featured Team Rocket defending a village from a flock of powerful Taillow, while Ritchie was shown to own a Taillow in another special.
- Taillow had an ultimately minor appearance in the Pokémon Adventures manga and was used by a Bird Keeper at the Battle Tower in the Emerald arc.
- Its name is simply a combination of "tail" and "swallow".
