Starship Mario is a small planet that has been converted into a spaceship by Lubba and his crew of Lumas. Mario uses it during Super Mario Galaxy 2 to travel from galaxy to galaxy in his quest to find Power Stars. It also acts as a peaceful location for the player to collect extra lives or learn about Mario's abilities.

Information[edit]

Mario first arrives on a featureless version of Starship Mario after collecting a Power Star from Peewee Piranha at Sky Station Galaxy. Explaining that they were attacked by Bowser and their stars were stolen, Lubba and the Lumas offer Mario use of the starship so that he can regather the stars for them. When he agrees, they remodel the ship to resemble Mario's face and name him its captain.

Like the Comet Observatory, Starship Mario is fueled by Power Stars and possesses a beacon at its core. This beacon remains blue over the course of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and will not react to Grand Stars, which are instead used to open portals that allow the space vessel to travel between worlds. The engine room that holds the beacon also contains pedestals where Mario can display the power-ups he's found during his journey.

Like Mario, the starship can use pipes and gather Star Bits by shattering the giant crystals found on the world maps. Starship Mario's movement across the worlds is hindered by Star Barriers, which require a certain number of Power Stars to pass. The ship can also find and pick up Hungry Lumas, providing Mario with the opportunity to feed them and create new galaxies.

Starship Mario will pick up several guests as it progresses. A Yoshi Egg is placed on the tip of Mario's nose, where Mario can team up with Yoshi outside of levels. The Toad Brigade appear on a Starshroom hovering nearby and provide services via the Mailtoad and Banktoad. Hungry Lumas show up in a secret room and offer to sell Mario Chance Cubes for 30 Star Bits or 100 coins. Luigi will also temporarily step onboard before leaving to hunt for stars; after Bowser is defeated, Luigi takes up permanent residence in the door beneath the ship's bridge, where he and Mario can swap places. A Cloud Flower also sprouts above the 'M' of Starship Mario's hat.

Other guests on Starship Mario and the missions that trigger their arrival include:

  • Star Bunny -
  • Penguin - Twin Falls Hideaway
  • Whittle -
  • Honeybee -
  • Jibberjay - Jungle Fluzzard Race
  • Bob-omb Buddy -
  • Goomba-loving Gearmo - C'mere Goomba
  • Topman-loving Gearmo - C'mere Topman
  • Two Green Lumas -
  • Rosalina - The Perfect Run

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Starship Mario is seen floating through space in the background of the Mario Galaxy stage, which appears in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Starship Mario is also represented by a trophy in the Wii U game and an Advance-rank Support Spirit (which boosts jumping ability) in Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, the Starship Mario's Spirit would possess a giant version of Mario in a battle on the Mario Galaxy stage (in its Battlefield form) with low gravity.
