Saturos is a member of the Mars Clan who acts as the main antagonist of Golden Sun along with his partner Menardi.

Background[edit]

Saturos was a powerful warrior who lived in Prox with the rest of the Mars Clan. Prox was the area that was most clearly in danger due to the seal on Alchemy, as the Mars Lighthouse being unlit caused the area to be plagued by torrential snowstorms. They had decided that the only way to save their village as well as the rest of Weyard from eventual destruction was to light all four of the lighthouses, but the Elemental Stars needed for this task were hidden within the Sol Sanctum by Vale. Prox sent numerous pleas to Vale, but Vale ignored all of this due to their sacred duty to protect the seal on Alchemy. Saturos and Menardi were appointed to a party to sneak into Mt. Aleph and discover its secrets. They successfully infiltrated the sanctum within Mt. Aleph, but they failed to solve the test and instead they accidentally set off a horrible storm that ravaged Vale. Saturos and Menardi were the only survivors from their party. As they regrouped outside, they found Isaac and Garet eavesdropping on their conversation, deciding to silence them by swiftly knocking them out in battle. Before they left, they saved a group of people who were nearly killed by a boulder - Felix, his parents and Isaac's father Kyle. They brought this group back to Prox with them, as Saturos decided to hold all three of the adults as hostages in order to force Felix into helping them in their quest. A town official, Puelle, disagreed with Saturos's use of hostages, but went along with it anyway.

Three years later, Saturos and Menardi returned to Vale due to hearing that the wise scholar Kraden was there, feeling that he was more likely to solve Sol Sanctum's secrets. For this journey, the pair were joined by Felix as well as the mysterious Mercury user Alex, who was secretly using all of them for his own ends. Saturos and Menardi confronted Kraden and told him everything that they knew about the secrets in Sol Sanctum, a level of detail that disturbed Kraden but also aroused his curiousity. They then tailed Kraden when he entered Mt. Aleph with Isaac, Garet and Felix's sister Jenna and bade their time until they reached the hidden chamber which contained the Elemental Stars. Saturos and Menardi revealed themselves after Isaac had grabbed three of the Stars from the area's distant corners, taking Jenna and Kraden hostage in order to make Isaac surrender the Stars onto them. They also had Felix reveal himself in order to earn their trust, and the transaction was successfully carried out. However, when he grabbed the Mars Star it set off an eruption and summoned the Wise One. Evaluating their options, Saturos's group realized that they had no choice but to escape without the last star, although they took Jenna and Kraden with them, realizing that in the event that Isaac and Garet survived, they would make good bargaining chips for the Mars Star.

With Jenna and Kraden as reluctant allies despite Felix's protests, Saturos's group made their way towards the Mercury Lighthouse to truly begin their journey. They were able to reach the top of the Mercury Lighthouse without incident due to Alex's help, and Saturos lit the lighthouse's beacon just before Isaac arrived. Saturos saw that they were lucky to have survived and decided to put an end to that by arrogantly deciding to battle them by himself, urging Menardi to go ahead and escort the hostages out of the lighthouse. Saturos fought them, but he found himself underperforming and unexpectedly losing. He realized his loss was due to the Mercury Lighthouse's beacon suppressing his Mars abilities while at the same time boosting the Mercury Psynergy of Isaac's new companion Mia. Alex then emerged from his hiding place and stalled them until Saturos regained his strength, at which point they escaped. Saturos's group than traveled to the continent of Gondowan, where they would find the next closest lighthouse, the Venus Lighthouse.

As they made their way through the continent, they learned that Sheba, who was considered an important person to the people of Lalivero, was being escorted through the desert. They attacked the group and captured Sheba for their own purposes, as they needed her to reach Jupiter Lighthouse. Regardless, he had promised the concerned Felix that Sheba would be released when they reached Venus Lighthouse. They then made their way towards Venus, wiping out various soldiers and civilians along the way. Saturos, Menardi and Sheba went ahead to the top of the lighthouse while Felix was to escort the others to Idejima. However, Felix returned to ensure that Sheba was being released, which led Saturos to reveal he would be holding onto her longer, and he started losing his trust in Felix. Isaac's group arrived just as they were ready to fight Felix and attempted to trade the Shaman's Rod that Ivan owned for Sheba's safety. Saturos accepted the rod, but he still refused to release Sheba as he only promised in his words not to harm her.

Saturos and Menardi then battled Isaac's group again, this time intent on killing them all, but the Proxians ultimately lost this battle. They were no longer able to stand, but Saturos was still able to toss the Mercury Star into the lighthouse, which ignited the beacon. This restored their strength fully due to fire and earth's shared relationship, and with their boosted energy they transformed into a ferocious two-headed Fusion Dragon. Despite their immense power, Isaac was able to defeat them again. Reverted to their original forms and completely defeated, Saturos and Menardi finally chose to kill themselves by tossing themselves into the beacon.

Abilities[edit]

Saturos is a skilled Mars Adept and uses more of his skills in each battle. His Psynergy attacks include Heat Flash, Fireball, Eruption and the powerful Pyrcoclasm. He also has healing techniques as well as Block, Protect and the status-effecting Haunt. Saturos also uses a sword for normal physical attacks.

Trivia[edit]

  • He is replaced by Agatio in the sequel.
  • In Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, Saturos is alluded to in the Sun Saga books which summarize the plots of the first two games, although his and Menardi's presence is severely downplayed in favor of Alex and Felix, most likely reflecting the in-universe perspective on the adventures. His likeness is also used as a target at the end of the first two areas of the Training Grounds, which also represent in-universe retellings of the first games' stories.
  • Saturos's boss theme is one of the more popular tracks of the Golden Sun series. This has led to it being remixed and reused in the following games for certain bonus bosses.
