Sain was a knight of Caelin and a playable unit in Fire Emblem. Unlike most knights, he was light-hearted and constantly making jokes. He also liked to show off (even if it left him vulnerable to an enemy attack) and flirted with every girl he came in contact with. This resulted in much bantering with his more serious-minded friend, Kent.

Background[edit]

Sain and Kent were deployed by Hausen to find his daughter Madelyn, whom had eloped to the Sacae Plains long ago with the chieftain of the Lorca tribe. Sain and Kent arrived to find that the tribe had been slaughtered by bandits, but they received word that the daughter of Madelyn and the Lorca chieftain was still alive. They eventually found the girl, Lyn, in "Chapter 1: The Footsteps of Fate:. They joined with her in order to escort her back to Caelin, but they found many obstacles along their path.

At one point Lundgren, who was usurping the throne of Caelin, declared that Lyn was a fraud and that Kent and Sain were oath-breaking traitors. This forced Sain and Kent to battle many of their former friends in the Caelin knights, including their old mentor General Eagler. Kent at first was remorseful about fighting the Caelin troops in "Chapter 8: Vortex of Strategy", but Sain did not think so and felt that the troops were traitors for following Lundgren. But both were saddened by Eagler's fate, thinking that he had been blackmailed into fighting them by Lundgren. After Lundgren's death in "Chapter 10: The Distant Plains", Sain remained in service of Castle Caelin. He was promoted to subcommander of the Caelin knights (working under Kent the commander). Sain was described as being much loved by the citizenry, even with his flirting habits.

In Eliwood and Hector's Tales, Sain joined Eliwood's group with the rest of Lyn's soldiers in "Chapter 15: The Noblewoman of Caelin" when Eliwood's group helped them to drive soldiers from Laus out of Castle Caelin. Sain fought with Eliwood's army for the remainder of the journey.

Possible Fates[edit]

Sain has different endings depending on whom he has A Level Support conversations with.

  • Default Ending- After Ostia takes over rule of Caelin, Sain resigns from his post and begins working as an independent knight, while continuing his woman-wooing ways.
  • Fiora and Sain's Ending- Sain and Fiora return to their respective positions at Caelin and Ilia after the war, but they make time for a long distance relationship. After Caelin is put under Ostian protection, Sain resigns from his post and moves to Ilia, where he marries Fiora.
  • Rebecca and Sain's Ending- After Ostia takes over rule of Caelin, Sain resigned and moved to Pherae, where he married Rebecca. In this ending Sain becomes the father of Wolt.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Sain is capable of having conversations with seven other characters in the game.

  • Fiora- Sain offers his protection to Fiora, although she insists that she is capable of taking care of herself. Sain insists in order to live up to his word as a knight, even when he comes down with a fever. Fiora helps him after he passes out, and when he recovers, he makes another pass at Fiora but she rejects him.
  • Kent- The first of their conversations is a typical Kent and Sain conversation where Sain tries to show off for the women, while Kent tries to make Sain stop. Later on, Sain talks to Kent about Lyn and they find that they both have feelings for her. But Sain decides to stand to the side and starts training Kent on how to talk with women so he could get together with Lyn. Kent and Sain then agree to watch over each other during battle, having grown closer as friends.
  • Isadora- Sain first tries hitting on her, but Isadora then tries making a bet with Sain. She claims she would go out with Sain only if he could defeat her in a jousting match, so that Isadora could improve her training. Sain loses several times, but in the process both learn about the different styles of fighting in Caelin and Pherae. They decide to arrange a jousting match between Caelin and Pherae after the enemy was defeated, although Sain makes the mistake of reverting to his old self and trying to hit on her again.
  • Louise- Sain attempts to hit on Louise, only to find out she is already married to Pent. He scolds himself and says goodbye to Louise in a melodramatic fashion, while pleading with Louise to remember him forever. Louise automatically has A-Level Support with Pent, so Sain can only get as high as a B Rank support with her.
  • Priscilla- Sain realizes the Priscilla is an Etrurian noble and begins nicknaming her Princess Priscilla. After finding Priscilla in a sad state, Sain attempts to console her, but Priscilla is unable to reveal the truth of her past to him. In the end she makes Sain remember that he had pledged his loyalty to Caelin, and after the enemy was defeated he would have to return there while she returned to Etruria. However, Priscilla assures Sain that he has kept her happy throughout the journey and tells him not to be sad and to continue keeping her happy.
  • Rebecca- In his usual manner, Sain attempts to hit on Rebecca. However, Rebecca later finds out about Sain's habit of hitting on every woman he meets, so she starts acting cold to him. Rebecca rejects Sain's constant flattery, saying that if he says those things to every woman he meets, none of them would be special. Sain insists that his feelings for her are real and that she could trust him, but he fell silent when Rebecca suggesting telling Lyn about this, causing Rebecca to call Sain a pig and storm off on him.
  • Serra- Sain makes his attempts at talking Serra into going out with him, but Serra remains coy about her answer. In the second Support conversation, she brags to Sain about how advance fashion is in Ostia. And in the third Support conversation, Serra and Sain gossip about whether Lyn will end up with Eliwood or Hector. Serra ultimately decides on Hector, and when Sain tries to ask Serra which girls like him, Serra says that she knows who does but won't tell him because she thinks he's gross for hitting on every girl he meets.

Trivia[edit]

  • In one Support conversation he claims that he had memorized the names of all the girls in Eliwood's army.
  • Although Sain appears to be the game's "Green Knight" (according to Fire Emblem tradition, Green Knights have high skill and speed while Red Knights have high strength and defense), this game switches around the tradition by giving Sain high strength and defense, the traits of a Red Knight. Conversely, Kent is the games's Red Knight and has the stats of a Green Knight.
