Planet SR388 is the setting for Metroid 2: Return of Samus and is frequently alluded to throughout the series. The importance of the planet is emphasized due to it being the origin of the Metroid as well as the X Parasite.

History[edit]

Long ago SR388 was a relatively normal planet. At one point a parasite, (later known as the X Parasite) spread across the planet. The ecosystem was in chaos and the X would potentially overrun the planet. The Chozo, still searching the galaxy, discovered the planet's plight and the danger of the X Parasite if ever spread off the planet. In order to combat this creature, they created a creature capable of consuming these X Parasite. From this, the Metroids were created. Before the Chozo left, they left many statues and much of their technology in deep tunnels in the planet. Many of their ancient cities still exist, but are in ruin.

With the introduction of the Metroids, the ecosystem of SR388 balanced out with the Metroids at the top of the food chain. Although it may not have been intended by the Chozo, the Metroids were able to evolve further due to the gamma radiation on the planet. Despite this, the Metroids did not completely overrun the food chain on the planet and other creatures on the planet continued to thrive.

This existence was disrupted when a Galactic Federation research ship discovered the Metroids on the planet. They captured one in stasis and took it back for research. Before their return, the ship was attacked by Space Pirates and the Metroid was stolen. After Samus's destruction of the Metroids on Zebes, the Federation decided the elimination of the Metroids was neccessary to protect the galaxy. After two different ships were lost in the attempt, the Federation sent Samus Aran to take care of the job. After her battles with the pirates on Tallon IV and Aether, Samus took on the Metroids on SR388 and exterminated all but one. The sole remaining Metroid was a hatchling she took with her.

Years later, after the destruction of Zebes, Samus Aran returned to SR388 to act as a guide for researchers from BioLogic Space Station. In this time, the X Parasite had repopulated the planet and infected most of the lifeforms. After Samus destroyed one of these infected lifeforms, she was infected with the X and nearly killed. An infusion of Metroid DNA allowed Samus to combat the parasite and even absorb it. After dealing with the X on the BSL Station, Samus had resolved to destroy the station. Her computer aid, Adam, suggested she take out SR388 as well to completely eliminate the X. BSL spacestation was directed to land on SR388 and exploded on impact, destroying SR388.

Geography[edit]

Very little is known about the makeup of SR388's surface. The planet is capable of supporting a variety of lifeforms, though it is unknown what kind of atmosphere it supports. Creatures on the planet are exposed to constant gamma rays, making it inhospitable to humans. Most of the planet's life is found underground in a variety of caverns. At different times the caves are filled with an acidic liquid that can destroy any type of technological armor.

Native Species[edit]
