Relicanth is an ancient fish-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It has no evolutionary line.

Information[edit]

Relicanth is a rare species that was discovered in deepsea explorations and has existed for a hundred million years without changing its form. The bodies of Relicanth are covered in tough scales which resemble craggy rocks, and their bodies can withstand the extreme pressure of the ocean depths. Relicanth also uses his pectoral fins to walk on the seafloor. It has a toothless mouth which it uses to feed on microorganisms.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire' and Emerald Versions, Relicanth rarely appeared at the ocean floor at Routes 124 and 126. The player would need to have a Relicanth at the head of their party (and a Wailord at the back) in order to reach the legendary golem Pokémon (Regirock, Registeel and Regice).

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, it could be rarely fished with the Super Rod at Route 226. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it could be fished at Route 12 and would appear there during swarms. In Black and White, it could be commonly fished in rippling water at Route 4.

Other Games[edit]

In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, it could be found at the Ocean. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Secret Storage 11, Endless Level 20, Forever Level 20 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the eightieth through eighty-ninth floors of Silver Trench. It was also recruitable in Explorers of Time and Darkness at Miracle Sea and Deep Miracle Sea. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, Relicanth could be found at the Canal Ruins.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Relicanth was featured in an episode of the Hoenn series where a group of them lived at a sunken ship. They helped Ash's group and a pair of married treasure hunters during their search for a treasure. Relicanth have also made other minor appearances.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Sapphire caught a Relicanth during the Ruby/Sapphire arc after she found it in a lake that had been dried up because of Groudon. She was able to use it to Dive to the ocean floor to reach the Seafloor Cavern and to awaken the Golem Pokémon.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a combination of "relic" (due to its age) with "coelacanth" (the real-life animal it is based on).
