Raven is a playable unit in Fire Emblem and is the game's only mercenary.

Background[edit]

Raymond was born to the prestigious House Cornwell in Caelin. He grew close to his sister, Priscilla, but she was later adopted by Count Caerleon of Etruria. The turning point of Raymond's life was when his parents died mysteriously after losing their peerage in the Lycian League. Raymond was filled with rage and desired someone to take out his revenge on. Hearing rumors connecting Ostia to the assassination, Raymond dedicated himself to killing anyone from House Ostia, in revenge. He changed his name to Raven. The full story, unknown to Raven, is that Cornwell had lost its peerage due to stealing money from the League, and afterwards the marquess and his wife killed themselves. Lucius, a former servant for House Caelin, remained with Raven and traveled alongside him while constantly tried to talk sense into him. The two became freelance soldiers in Caelin's army.

Raven was first seen in "Whereabouts Unknown" (Eliwood Chapter 16, Hector Chapter 17). He and Lucius had been taken prisoner by the Laus soldiers who were invading Caelin, and they were held imprisoned in Caelin's prison. Raven was able to leave the dungeon by joining with the Laus soldiers in battle with Eliwood's group, hoping to seize this opportunity to attack Marquess Ostia's brother Hector who was among the group. But if he is confronted by Priscilla, a reunion after they had been separated for ten years, Raven will change his mind and work with Eliwood and Hector's group. Raven covered up this show of affection for his sister by telling Lucius that he was merely trying to get closer to the enemy.

Possible Fates[edit]

Raven has two possible endings, depending on whether or not he gets an A Rank Support with Lucius.

  • Default Ending- Raven vanished without a word. There were unconfirmed sightings of Raven in Araphen (where Lucius builds an orphanage in his default ending) afterwards.
  • Lucius and Raven's Ending- After the final battle, Raven revealed his past to Hector. Hector offered to rebuild his home, but Raven refused and continued his mercenary career with Lucius. Raven's heart was now eased, to Lucius's delight.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Raven is capable of having Support conversations with five other characters.

  • Bartre- In the first Support conversation, Bartre recognizes Raven as a fellow warrior and attempts to spar with him, but Raven constantly dodges his attacks. In the second conversation, Bartre tries communicating with Raven through words rather then fists. Suggesting they get to know each other, Bartre shows Raven a family tree he wrote up. Raven criticized his handwriting and Bartre says it is because he rushed the family tree, so Raven asks him to rewrite it and take all the time he needs to do so. Bartre then asks Raven to give him handwriting lessons, much to Raven's dismay. In the third conversation, Bartre again approaches Raven, oblivious to Raven's attempts to ignore him and calls Raven his friend. After saying that he'd have to wait until going home to finish his family tree (Raven encouraging him to go home immediately), Bartre tries challenging Raven to combat again. But Raven says that since they're friends, friends know each other's levels and do not need to fight. Bartre buys this and is about to return to his post when he realizes he doesn't know Raven's name.
  • Lucius- Lucius attempted to persuade Raven to stopping his campaign of revenge against House Ostia, but Raven refused and asked Lucius to leave. But Lucius said that without House Cornwell, he had no home to go to anymore and began to get angry at Raven. Raven then revealed that he wanted Lucius and Priscilla to leave because they were the last of his family, and he did not want them to suffer a similar fate to his parents, then he apologized for his harshness. Raven then saw clearly and decided to talk things over with House Ostia after the adventure was over, and to continue searching for the answers to his parents' killers. Raven then told Lucius that he wanted him to stay home so that he had someone to come home to. Lucius suggested that he instead got married so that Raven could come home to her and travel with him, but Raven said that he didn't need the jabbering that came with a wife, saying that he already got enough jabbering with Lucius.
  • Priscilla- In the first Support conversation, Priscilla shows Raven a ring he gave her when they were children in an attempt to connect with him. In the second conversation, Raven urges Priscilla to return to Etruria so she does not get mixed up in his plans. Priscilla attempts to inquire about Raven's plans, but Raven shuns her and says that she is now part of Count Caerleon's family, and he is no longer her brother. In the third conversation, Priscilla refuses to return home and says that she desires to be by her brother. This reminds Raven of how stubborn she would get about some issues in their youth. Finally Raven tells Priscilla that she wins; he told her about his plans to get revenge on Ostia, but he gave that up so that he did not have to abandon his little sister. Priscilla concludes by thanking Raven.
  • Rebecca- In the first Support conversation, Raven helps Rebecca to replace her bowstring. They introduce each other, but Raven says he already knows her name since he makes a point of knowing everyone in this ragtag band of mercenaries. Rebecca comes to think of Raven as somewhat scary but good-looking, and possibly good on the inside. In the second Support conversation, Rebecca decides to thank Raven by hunting and cooking something for him. This leads Raven to think of her as tougher than he expected. In the third Support conversation, Rebecca returns with the meat and is surprised to see Raven smile. Raven admits he is human and has emotions, and Rebecca mentions how he reminds her of her brother. She tells Raven about Dan and how she thinks he must not miss her if he hadn't communicated with her in the last five years, but Raven assures her that Dan must have some reason keeping him from returning to home and that he would never forgot her. Raven says that is what brothers do. Rebecca then starts to cry, leading Raven to revise his opinion of her by saying she's tough, but still just a child.
  • Wil- Wil meets with Raven and asks him how old he is, saying that he looks like he's around the same age as Wil, but he talks as if he's older and has the aura of an older person. Raven does not answer him directly, so Will assumes him older and starts calling him Senior Raven. Raven eventually admits his age, and Wil finds they are about the same age. Wil decides to keep calling him Senior Raven anyway, and says he will only talk to Raven normally when he stops scowling at him, until he finds that the scowling face was Raven's normal face. Raven later asks Wil if his cluelessness is just an act, but Wil does not answer and instead comes up with a new nickname for Raven, "Rave".

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he appears as a Novice-rank Primary Spirit who also gives a boost to the power of sword attacks. When fought in a Spirit battle, Raven's Spirit possesses Roy in a battle where both fighters have their defense lowered and attack heightened.
