Perry is a talking parasol whom acts as Princess Peach's sidekick and primary weapon in Super Princess Peach.

Background

The first part of Perry's background is unknown, seemingly even to himself. He apparently once was a young boy (whether a human, Toad or some other creature is unspecified) with strange powers of some sort. The earliest memory he recalls in the game is of waking up alone in the mountains with no idea of who he was. However, he was taken in by a kindly old man whom he came to call "Grandfather" once the man saw he had no one else to take him in. Perry had his happiest memories there, but they came to a tragic end when a magician and his bulky minion (seen only in silhouette, but possibly a Magikoopa and another Koopa) came across them and sought to abduct Perry for their boss due to his strange powers.

They proceeded to transform Perry into a parasol to make him easier to carry and took him away. However, Perry was able to wriggle free and then lay alone on the mountain road until he was discovered by a traveling merchant, who thought Perry was a normal umbrella but had some strange urge to take him regardless. The merchant wound up selling Perry to Toadsworth, who kept him until the events of Super Princess Peach, due to believing he was more than a normal umbrella (but not knowing how right he truly was).

After Mario and Luigi along with a large amount of Toads were kidnapped by Bowser, Toadsworth entrusted Princess Peach with Perry when she decided to venture alone to Vibe Island in order to rescue them all. Perry spoke to Peach openly and helped her in her adventures on the island. After each boss was defeated, Perry dreamed at the ensuing campfire about the memories of his life with Grandfather. When they nearly reached Bowser's Villa, Perry woke up from his dream with a determination to stop Bowser because he was bad like the people who captured Grandfather, and he had some strange feeling that helping to stop Bowser would bring him closer to finding his Grandfather. However, it is unknown if this is true as after Bowser was defeated, Perry was last seen leaving with Peach and the Mario Bros.

Abilities

Perry has a wide variety of abilities for an umbrella, which may or may not be related to the unspecified "strange powers" he apparently had before being transformed into an umbrella. Most commonly, Peach can use Perry as a weapon to hit or pick up enemies. Perry can then consume enemies that are picked up in order to refill Peach's Vibe Gauge. Additionally, Perry has a variety of abilities that are either used only in certain environments or must be bought from the Shop.

• Bowlbrella- Used upon contact with water, Perry floats and acts as a raft for Peach.
• Floatbrella- The most basic ability, Peach uses Perry to glide through the air, an ability she commonly uses in games with other umbrellas or her dress.
• Slidebrella- Used upon leaping onto certain ropes. Perry's handle will hook along the ropes while Peach rides in the umbrella down the rope at high speed, and Perry must often jump from rope to rope while avoiding or knocking out enemies until reaching the ends of these areas.
• Subrella- Used in underwater segments. Perry transforms into a miniature submarine that Peach rides within. It fires bubbles as its primary weapon.
• Poundbrella- An ability bought from the shop, Peach uses Perry to slam down into the ground in a manner similar to the hip drop/ground pound. This can be used to stun enemies with tremors and smash through certain obstacles.
• Chargebrella- An ability bought from the shop, with this Perry "charges up" and unleashes a blast of energy that can eliminate enemies and obstacles.
• Dashbrella- The final ability, which is unlocked upon completion of the game. With this, Peach can smack enemies repeatedly with Perry while she runs.

Video Games

• In Densetsu no Stafy 4, Perry appears as part of a Princess Peach costume for Starly, with a pink bow tied around his handle.
• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Perry has appeared as a trophy and sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and as a Support Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with the sticker and the Spirit both being represented by his artwork from Super Princess Peach. As a Support Spirit, his effect is slowing a character's fall speed when jumping, and his Spirit possesses Peach during Spirit battles.

Other Media

• Perry made an appearance in the Super Mario-Kun manga, during an arc based on Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. In it, Perry was lent to Baby Peach by E. Gadd, and he used it to defeat a Shroobworth and his intern in order to save both versions of Toadsworth from them.
