NES Remix (known as Famicom Remix in Japan) is a minigame compliation game utilizing segments of various NES games that was released for the Wii U's eShop in 2013. It spawned several follow-up games.

Information[edit]

The game consists of 204 challenges that can be complete, which utilize segments of classic NES games. The challenges consists of short segments from the original games in which players must complete a certain task. For each game, there are a number of challenges that are based directly on segments from the original games. There are also a number of Remix challenges which add additional elements to the challenges, such as zooming out the screen, darkening the level or adding elements from other games such as completing a level of Donkey Kong as Link, who is unable to jump. In each challenge, players have a limited amount of lives that are represented in the form of hearts, and there are often conditions to the challenges such as time limits. At the end of each challenge, players are ranked by how quickly they performed the challenge in the form of one to three stars, which can become rainbow stars in response to the fastest runs. Players are also rewarded for completing challenges in the form of Bits, which could be used to purchase collectible stamps representing the sprites of various characters, creatures and items from the associated games.

NES Remix also had Miiverse connectivity until the service's discontinuation, with the ability to make posts and share clear times with other players.

Games[edit]

The NES versions of the following games were utilized for the challenges:

The Bonus challenges also utilized Donkey Kong 3, Urban Champion, Baseball and Tennis.

Development[edit]

The game started as a pet project by Kochi Hayashida of Nintendo EAD Tokyo which he worked on as a way to play NES games at work, as he was not able to play many of them when he was a child. The idea of taking different segments from games came from his wish to skip ahead to certain scenes of video games. He developed the first 100 challenges of NES Remix, and indieszero was brought in to help finish the game. For the sake of authenticity, Hayashida decided to remake various glitches and bugs from the original games in the NES Remix versions.

Legacy[edit]

Ports/Remakes[edit]

  • In 2014, the first two NES Remix games received a shared physical release for the Wii U as NES Remix Pack. Its American release was a year after the release of the original NES Remix.
  • Many of the challenges from the original NES Remix were later included in the third game, Ultimate NES Remix for the Nintendo 3DS.

Sequels[edit]

It was followed by NES Remix 2 just four months later, which used a different set of NES games that included sequel games such as Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and Super Mario Bros. 3. The third game would later be Ultimate NES Remix, which contained challenges from both games mixed with new challenges and features.
