Meowth is a cat Pokémon appearing in several Pokémon games. It is one of the more well-known Pokémon, particularly due to all the screentime it receives as a member of Team Rocket in the Pokémon anime.

Information[edit]

Meowth are primarily nocturnal cat creatures, usually sleeping during the daytime. These Pokémon have a love for round and shiny objects, and they will wander the streets at night to search for loose change. They move discreetly by withdrawing their claws into their hands. Meowth cannot stop from picking up round or shiny objects and will often play with them until they fall asleep. They usually pick up and secretly hoard coins. The Meowth is also known for the shiny coin on its head, which glows when a Meowth is near a shiny object.

Meowth is useful for its Pay Day ability, which can be used to earn money for the player. At Level 28, it can evolve into a Persian.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon Blue Version (as well as Pokémon: FireRed and LeafGreen Versions, Meowth is found on Routes 5, 6, 7 and 8. In FireRed and LeafGreen, Meowth can additionally be found at Bond Bridge, the Canyon Entrance, Cape Brink, Five Isle Meadow, Kindle Road, Ruin Valley, Seavault Canyon, Treasure Beach and the Water Path.

In Pokémon: Silver and SoulSilver, it is found on Routes 5, 6, 7, 8, 38 and 39, while in Pokémon: Crystal Version Meowth can also be found on Route 11 and only appears at night. In Pokémon: Emerald Version, Meowth can only be obtained by trading a Skitty at the Battle Frontier, while in Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, it can be found in the Trophy Garden on a random day. Meowth also appears in the Sightseeing course of the Pokéwalker. from which it can be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

Other Games[edit]

Meowth can be found in Cerulean City, the Vermillion City Streets, Celadon City and Saffron City in Pokémon Pinball. Meowth is also featured in a Blue Version bonus game, where he can be hit to extract coins from him. In Pokémon Snap, Meowth can be found on the Beach level. Team Rocket's Meowth also appears with Jessie and James as opponents in the tenth level of 1-P Stadium as well as in the Spa Service mode.

Team Rocket's Meowth is also known for starring in Meowth's Party, an interactive technical demo for the Nintendo Gamecube that was originally shown at 2000's Spaceworld convention. The demo was then used for the ending of the Pokémon anime and was incorporated into the Pichu Bros. in Party Panic shorts featured in the game Pokémon Channel. The video revolves around Meowth playing a guitar and singing while luring in Pokémon to his party so that Team Rocket could steal them.

In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Meowth can be captured from Cipher Peon Fostin in Phenac City, and could be transferred to the Gameboy Advance Pokémon games after being purified. Meowth also appears in Pokémon Dash as a rival competitor. Meowth can be obtained at either Secret Storage 9, Secret Storage 18, Endless Level 22 or Mr. Who's Den in Pokémon Trozei!. Meowth was also one of the potential starter Pokémon which the player is turned into at the beginning of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness. It is additionally found in the third through sixth floors of the Western Cave in the first games, and in the second games Meowth can be found at the first nineteen basement floors of both Marine Resort and Happy Outlook. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Meowth could be found in the same places as in Explorers and was also available as a partner Pokémon.

In Pokémon Ranger, Meowth can be found at Fall City or the Dusk Factory, while in Pokémon Rumble it is found at Windy Prairie. In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, Meowth could be befriended at Cavern Zone and Haunted Zone, and also appeared at Meeting Place.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, Meowth has appeared in every game of the series except for Melee as one of the Pokémon that can be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item. Meowth attacks with Pay Day by throwing coins. In the original Super Smash Bros., it scattered coins in all directions, but in later appearances, it instead alternated between throwing coins to the left and right.
    • Meowth has also been represented by a trophy (with a guitar, based on "Meowth's Party") in Melee, a trophy and sticker in Brawl, a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U game and an Advanced-rank Support Spirit (which increases the power of thrown items) in Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Meowth's Spirit would possess two Isabelle duplicates in a battle where they were also aided by Poké Ball summon of Meowth.

Other Media[edit]

  • Meowth is featured in the Pokémon anime series working with Jessie and James, the Team Rocket members appearing in every episode. Unlike other Meowth and Pokémon in general, this Meowth does not spend time in a Pokéball and can both walk upright and speak human language. One episode revealed Meowth's past, showing that he taught himself how to walk and talk in an attempt to woo a female Meowth named Meowzie. Along with Pikachu, Meowth is one of the few Pokémon to still be on the show since its beginning. Other Meowth rarely appear, although a trainer named Tyson possessed one Meowth which was modeled as an homage to Puss-in-Boots, although this Meowth inexplicably could walk upright as well.

Trivia[edit]

  • Meowth's name seems to be a combination of "meow" and "mouth".
