Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions is an action-oriented RPG game that was released for the Nintendo 3DS in October 2017 and acted as an enhanced remake of the original game of the Mario & Luigi subseries, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. This game also features a new mode, known in-game as "Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser".

Information[edit]

The main game is Superstar Saga with graphics and gameplay enhanced to match the capabilities of the 3DS. Many of the sprites of characters and enemies were specifically changed to match their appearances on the other 3DS Mario & Luigi games. As the original game was on the Game Boy Advance, this game also adds some minor functions on the touch screen. Some aspects of the game have also been altered, such as giving the Koopalings dialogue (and changing up some of their battles) and omitting or replacing some characters such as Psycho Kamek and Geno. This game also features amiibo compatibility, as scanning Mario-related amiibo can unlock stamps that can be redeemed for prizes within the game.

Minion Quest[edit]

The remake of Mario Bros. from the original game has been replaced with a new side game called "Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser". This game follows a story parallel to the events of Superstar Saga, in which Captain Goomba leads Bowser's forces in an attempt to rescue Bowser. It is partly a strategy game in which the player builds up a force of minion characters (consisting of various creatures that typically act as enemies in the series) and chooses which ones to send into battle.

The battles are mostly automatic, but there are chances for the player to perform button inputs in order to strengthen critical attacks, and the player can sometimes use points known as CP to issue Captain Commands that will influence battle actions. More enemy units could be recruited throughout the game, including Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings. The units are divided into three types that form a triangle together: Melee, Ranged and Flying. Each type has an advantage and disadvantage against one of the other two, with Melee being strong against Ranged, Ranged against Flying and Flying against Melee.

Legacy[edit]

Afterwards, the same remake treatment was applied to Bowser's Inside Story, skipping over the second Mario & Luigi game to cover the third one. Like the remake of Superstar Saga, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey would feature a new side game set during the main game's story. It featured similar gameplay, but centered around the character of Bowser Junior.
