Debut Pokémon: Diamond/Pearl Versions

Lucian is the fourth and final member of Sinnoh's Elite Four who is featured as an opponent in Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Versions, as well as the remakesBrilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. He specializes in Psychic-type Pokémon.

Background[edit]

Lucian was the leader of the Elite Four in Sinnoh. He was said to be the toughest of the four and fought well to live up to that reputation, although he was actually quite humble. He would read books while awaiting challengers in order to calm his nerves so that he could handle situations without panicking.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum (as well as Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl), he was challenged by Lucas/Dawn just as he finished reading a book. He was defeated and congratulated Lucas/Dawn on defeating the Pokémon League, but he went on to remind them that there was still the current champion to face in order to complete the Pokémon League challenge. He left Lucas/Dawn with the warning that the champion would be much tougher than the rest of the Elite Four. Afterwards, he would also appear at the Canalave City Library, where he read one of several books or articles and described its contents to Lucas/Dawn.

Pokémon Roster[edit]

Lucian uses the following Pokémon for the Elite Four challenge in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum:

In Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, he uses the Diamond/Pearl version of his roster when battled for the first time and the Platinum roster for an initial rematch. For rematches after completion of the Stark Mountain storyline, he uses a variation of his Platinum roster that has Slowbro added.

In Other Pokémon Games[edit]

In Pokémon Masters EX, Lucian and his Girafarig appeared as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature. He could alternately use Slowbro, Gallade or Bronzong when faced as an opponent. Lucian was featured in the Solo Event "Sinnoh Elite Four Assemble", in which the members of Sinnoh's Elite Four gathered on the beach after all of them had arrived on Pasio. Lucian felt that he would be entertained by observing strategies and battling techniques from other cultures, and he also hoped to find interesting books. He also confirmed that all of them hoped to surpass Cynthia. Lucian could appear as an opponent in the Champion Stadium's Sinnoh Challenge, which replicated the line-up of Sinnoh's Elite Four and champion.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • Lucian has appeared in several episodes of the Pokémon anime, being the first of Sinnoh's Elite Four to appear. He was first featured in one episode where he easily defeated Dawn's Buizel using only his Bronzong and told Ash Ketchum about the Elite Four challenge. Later on, he made a cameo appearance battling Cynthia for the Sinnoh championship on television, a battle which he lost.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Lucian made a brief appearance in the Platinum arc, where he and other Elite Four members helped to decipher Charon's notes in order to help Diamond and Pearl.

Trivia[edit]

  • Lucian's English name may be based off of 'lux', the Latin word for 'light', and it could also refer to the words 'hallucination' or 'illusion'. His Japanese name is Goyou, which is derived from the Japanese word for a five-needle pine and may also refer to a Japanese word for "enlightenment".
  • In Diamond/Pearl, an old man on Route 228 mentions having a grandson who loves reading and has a library of books on ESP, which may be referring to Lucian.
  • His room at the Pokémon League is an ordinary-looking room with a purple floor and a fighting ring in the middle. In Platinum. it contains two glowing orbs on each side of the room.
