Lowen is a playable unit in Fire Emblem who is both a knight and a chef. He is good-hearted, hard-working and generous to a fault.

Background[edit]

Lowen's grandfather was a cook for Lord Elbert's father (and Eliwood's grandfather), a previous marquess of Pherae. After Elbert succeeded him as Pherae, Lowen's grandfather continued cooking for him, since Elbert gad grown accustomed to his cooking. However, Lowen's parents were still peasants. He was born in a small village far outside Pherae. One day the village was attacked by bandits, but Harken came to protect him. This inspired Lowen to become a knight as well, so he went into training eventually became a squire learning under Marcus as his apprentice. After his grandfather threw out his back, Lowen started cooking for Elbert whenever they traveled together.

In Fire Emblem, Lowen was called into action by Marcus as a second escort to Eliwood to find the missing Lord Elbert in "Taking Leave" (Eliwood Chapter 11), as most of Pherae's strongest knights had disappeared with Elbert. Marcus and Eleanora had been concerned that Eliwood wasn't eating much, but Lowen found that Eliwood ate more when he was eating Lowen's meals, so Lowen went out of his way to prepare all of Eliwood's meals. At the time, Lowen was also troubled due to having lost his grandfather three years ago, and his father only six months ago.

Possible Fates[edit]

Lowen has two possible endings, depending on whether or not he has A-Rank Support with Rebecca, although it is possible for both of these endings to have occurred.

  • Default Ending- Lowen replaced Marcus as Pherae's most famed knight and served Pherae well with his zeal.
  • Rebecca and Lowen's Ending- Lowen and Rebecca were married, and they became two of Eliwood's most faithful retainers. In this ending, Lowen becomes the father of Wolt, who is said to have inherited Lowen's chivalrous spirit.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Lowen is capable of having support conversations with five other characters.

  • Eliwood - In the first Support conversation, Lowen discovers that Eliwood has not eaten breakfast and so he panics, blaming himself for oversleeping while Eliwood tries to calm him down. In the second conversation, Lowen wakes up after fainting from not eating breakfast. Lowen realizes that Eliwood has skipped breakfast again and rushes off to get him some food. Eliwood decides to warn Marcus. In the third Support conversation, Lowen finds that Eliwood has finally eaten breakfast and enjoyed it. Lowen is overjoyed, and it is at this point that Eliwood finds out that Lowen has been preparing all of his meals. Lowen tells Eliwood about his family's background in cooking and how he has been cooking for Eliwood the entire journey. Eliwood then shows Lowen great gratitude for his work and promises to make time for all of his meals.
  • Harken- In the first Support conversation, Harken catches Lowen's bag of emergency rations when they almost fall off of his horse. Lowen then accidentally mentions the knights who had traveled with Harken and died under his command. Lowen apologizes, but then Harken says that Lowen is simply saying the truth and apologizes that Lowen witnessed the impotence of his knights. In the second conversation, Harken doubts his abilities and tells Lowen not to follow his example. However, Lowen tells Harken the story of how Harken had inspired him to take the path of a knight years ago. In the third conversation, it is shown that Lowen's story told Harken that should stop blaming himself and occupying himself with guilt when he should be protecting Eliwood. He then assures Lowen that he will be a fine knight one day and also orders him to bring the emergency rations to Merlinus, saying that a knight can go without food for a while.
  • Isadora - Isadora meets with Lowen and learns of the hardships they have recently encountered, and they agree to fight alongside each other. After seeing that Isadora is at least slightly hungry, Lowen rolls out a blanket for her and starts to prepare a feast. This causes Isadora to wonder how he fought his way through all those harsh battles while stopping to have picnics during each battle. In the second Support conversation, Lowen offers Isadora found from his emergency rations, but she refuses to eat. Lowen wonders if it has anything to do with Harken's disappearance, but Isadora denies this. Isadora then comments that Lowen has developed as a knight and can become a great knight of Pherae, although Lowen is reluctant to accept these compliments. In the third Support conversation, Isadora once again refuses to eat Lowen's food but also thanks him for worrying about her wellbeing. Lowen then vows to one day become a great knight of Pherae whom Isadora, Marcus and even Harken could be proud of. Isadora is confident that he is dedicated enough to reach his goal, and she then decides to ride alongside him, as knights of Pherae.
  • Marcus- Marcus begins scolding Lowen harshly for slacking off and tells him that even though he has heart, he needs steel in his mind and his belly. Lowen mentions he is practicing 1,000 lance thrusts a day, but Marcus then yells at him for only doing the bare minimum amount and since Lowen is only half a knight, he should do double the exercise. In the second conversation, Marcus spars with Lowen and knocks him down, but Lowen continues to challenge Marcus. In the third conversation, instead of scolding, Marcus congratulates Lowen and appoints him a full-fledged knight. Marcus then finds his stomach rumbling, and although he tries to deny his hunger, Lowen whips up some boar's meat dumplings for Marcus.
  • Rebecca- In the first conversation, Rebecca attempts to boost Lowen's confidence by telling an exaggerated account of one time when Lowen had successfully saved her village from a group of bandits. In the second Support conversation, Lowen continues thinking lowly of his abilities, while Rebecca attempts to convince him that Marcus is just being too harsh with his teachings. To thank him for his hard work, Rebecca gives Lowen some food she prepared herself to compliment his emergency rations, having learned about his emergency rations from Marcus. In the third Support conversation, Lowen rushes to Rebecca's side after experiencing a dark premonition, only to find that Rebecca is unharmed. Lowen reveals that he cares deeply for Rebecca and does not want to lose her after having lost his father and grandfather not too long ago. Rebecca is happy to hear this, and they are followed by an awkward silence. Rebecca finally breaks the silence by guessing that Lowen's dark premonition must have been some sort of terrible feeling, but Lowen corrected her by saying it is actually a terrible rumbling in his stomach.
