Lotad is an aquatic plant-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It is the first in a three-stage evolutionary line, with its evolved forms being Lombre and Ludicolo.

Information

Lotad resembles an aquatic plant which lives in ponds and lakes. They usually float at the surface and act as ferries to Pokémon that cannot swim by having them ride the broad leaves on their heads. Lotad lived on land long ago, only to begin living in the water instead when the leaf on its head became too large and heavy to carry. It usually seeks clean water, because Lotad becomes weak if the leaf on its head wilts or dies.

It evolves into Lombre at Level 14.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Sapphire and Emerald, Lotad was somewhat commonly found at Routes 102 and 114. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, it would appear uncommonly at Routes 203, 204, 205 and 212 only when a Sapphire cartridge was inserted in the GBA slot. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Lotad could appear in the Safari Zone's Plains and Desert areas if enough Water objects were placed in the area. In White, Lotad could appear when surfing at White Forest.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Lotad could be hatched from an egg and also sometimes appeared as bumpers on the Ruby Field. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 4, Huge Storage 3, Endless Level 1 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams. it could be recruited at the first three floors of Waterfall Pond, and in Explorers of Time and Darkness it was recruitable at the first eight basement floors of Waterfall Cave and Serenity River. In Pokémon Ranger, it was found at Olive Jungle. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was found at Silver Falls. Lotad also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure where it could be befriended at the Meadow Zone and also appeared at the Meeting Place.

• In the Pokémon anime, one episode early in the Hoenn series featured three sisters who owned several Lotad, and one was given to Brock. It was somewhat slow but proved to be useful, especially when doing a water combo attack with his Mudkip. It eventually evolved into a Lombre after falling into a well. Other Lotad have made minor appearances.
• Lotad have only made minor appearances in the Pokémon Adventures manga primarily in the Ruby/Sapphire arc, as a wild Lotad attacking Ruby in one instant and as a Pokémon used by Team Aqua members in another instance.

Trivia

• Its name seems to be a combination of "lotus" (which represents a type of flower) with either "lily pad" (which the leaf on its head strongly resembles) or "tadpole" (likely because it is a young stage and has some similarities with amphibians).
