Debut Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Fawful is a hyperactive small Bean who originally served as Cackletta's faithful servant and was a recurring enemy in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga before being promoted to serving as the main villain for Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. A technical expert, Fawful has invented a variety of powerful machines, which earned him favor with Cackletta. One of his most often-used inventions is special headgear with rocket jets, a fireball-spewing cannon and a vacuum that can even suck up spirits. However his grammar skills are not as good, and he speaks in sentences such as the infamous "I HAVE FURY!"

Background[edit]

Superstar Saga[edit]

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, he aided Cackletta's most ambitious scheme to steal the Bean Star and use it to, as Fawful says, make "the sandwich of Cackletta's desires". First he helped to steal Princess Peach's voice, which would act as the bread of the sandwich. Then he helped to foil an attempted rescue mission when he battled the Bowser that he hates and two other fink-rats called Mario and Luigi on the Koopa Cruiser- hoping that victory over them would be the mustard on that bread. Although Fawful was defeated by the Mario Bros., he returned in a sneak attack and scuttled their ship.

On arrival in the Beanbean Kingdom, Fawful continued to mar the heroes' progress at Hoohoo Mountain; he kidnapped Prince Peasley and turned the prince into a monster, and he also tried blocking the Mario Bros' path with a stone gargoyle. Afterwards he and Cackletta stole the Bean Star, bringing them even closer to completing the sandwich. At Woohooniversity they were to spread the mayonnaise, only to be struck by misfortune; it ended with them losing the Bean Star and Cackletta's body being destroyed. But his master was not dead yet- Fawful sucked up Cackletta's soul and carried it in his helmet until he found a perfect host body- the Bowser that he hates. Under the new being, Bowletta, Fawful continued to do more dirty work which brought him to confront Mario and Luigi several more times, but they did not fight again until their last battle.

Fawful showed up again in an entrance with drama for his last fight with the Mario Brothers in Bowser's Castle, guarding Bowletta's room. This time Fawful ditched his red cape and headgear, and garbed himself in a skin-tight suit, revealing himself to have bat-like wings. Those brothers had taken too many bites of Cackletta's sandwich, and Fawful could not stand it any longer. He also had a big pre-battle monologue in which he felt his light truly shone like angry sunbeams of rage, but he also realized that he was just Cackletta's toady, which filled him with fear and confusion about the upcoming battle. Needing no long speech, Fawful then engaged his battle with the Mario Brothers, safe within a giant metal dome that shot fireballs and lasers and was immune to everything but its own fireballs. However, the one flaw of the machine was that it would occasionally overheat and cause Fawful to come shooting out- making him vulnerable to attack.

Although he lost the actual battle, Fawful then started a second battle: a battle of comebacks. While Mario and Luigi congratulated themselves over their victory, Fawful jumped to his feet and blasted them back to take advantage of their carelessness. But then Fawful's pride became carelessness, and he was smacked back by Prince Peasley. But Fawful then suffered the same carelessness again in the finale of the finale of the finale, when those fink-rats Mario and Luigi came back and smacked him out of the castle, where he disappeared in a burst of smoke. Some presumed Fawful to have died in this encounter, but Fawful was still alive out there, biding his time- and above all he still had fury.

Partners in Time[edit]

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, it is revealed that Fawful has in fact survived and taken up residence in the sewers under Peach's Castle following Cackletta's demise. Hidden within a pipe that only the Baby Mario Bros. could enter, he woefully recounts his tale of defeat by the fink rats who look very similar to the babies before offering to sell them extremely valuable badges for an extremely large amount of beans that they've been digging up throughout the adventure. Fawful claimed to be preparing for a comeback, a prophecy that he would eventually fulfill in the following game.

Bowser's Inside Story[edit]

Fawful after promoting to main villain

Fawful eventually set his master plan into motion in Bowser's Inside Story, utilizing his technological prowess as well as his new army of minions, including his own trusted subordinate Midbus. He first took on the tole of a mysterious merchant, selling contaminated Mushrooms to various Toads that caused them to swell to gigantic, balloon-like sizes. This epidemic became known as The Blorbs. This led the princess to hold an emergency meeting at her castle in order to address a method of curing the Blorbs. Fawful then appeared to Bowser, who was fresh from a defeat at the Mario Brothers' hands, in the Dimble Woods and sold him a Vacuum Mushroom.

Under the influence of the Vacuum Mushroom, Bowser inhaled everyone in the conference room, including the Mario brothers and the princess, leaving them all trapped in his body. This left Fawful free to take over both Peach and Bowser's castle as part of his "power brunch", with all major threats to his rule eliminated. Fawful did not consider Bowser to be a threat, so he had Midbus defeat him and left him homeless. Fawful proceeded to renovate Bowser's Castle into Fawful Theater, where he performed for Bowser's minions, whom he had brainwashed into forgetting Bowser and being loyal to him. Those of Bowser's minions who rebelled were placed in cages across the kingdom. As opposed to his usual fury, he now had "chortles".

Fawful also used his inventiveness to modify both castles as well. Bowser's castle was given jets to make it capable of flight and combat. He went even further with Princess Peach's Castle, making it capable of transforming into a fighting robot. However, Fawful was not content with this and soon sought more power, specifically from an artifact known as the Dark Star. He needed Princess Peach to find it, so he allowed Bowser to enter the threater and made him battle Midbus as entertainment. After Bowser defeated Midbus, Fawful treated him to a feast, but one that made Bowser obese. While Bowser was stuck in his own floor, Fawful used a special invention to snatch Peach from Bowser's body and retreated to Toad Town, while leaving Bowser with the means to slim down to his original weight.

In the Toad Town Caves, Fawful was able to find and retrieve the Dark Star. He then brought the Dark Star and Peach back to Peach's castle in order to drain energy from Peach's body to power the Dark Star and cure him of his angst that was caused by the Dark Star's powerlessness. Bowser finally arrived as the transfer was in its final stages, at which point Fawful powered up Midbus with a special gun and sicced him on Bowser. After Midbus was defeated for good, the ceremony was complete and Fawful used his suction machine to drain energy from the powered-up Dark Star. He had drained about half of its energy and become Dark Fawful when Bowser seemed to destroy him with a single punch, although he had actually slipped away somehow and sought more power.

After Bowser exited the castle, Fawful brought Princess Peach's Castle to life and had it attack Bowser. Bowser was able to take down "Super Peach's Castle of Fury", at which point Fawful retreated into the castle. Bowser confronted Fawful once again, and he expressed dismay at how much of a pain Bowser had been to him, likening him to the red and green mustaches that he hated (a comparison that enraged Bowser). Intent on showing the Fury of Fawful, Dark Fawful finally engaged Bowser in battle, only to be finally defeated. This caused Fawful to shrivel up into a small, dark, spider-like creature. He scurried away immediately, only to be sucked up and absorbed by the remainder of the Dark Star, which had taken on the form of a Dark Bowser.

Dark Fawful's remains were then bonded with the core of the Dark Star. During the final battle between Bowser and Dark Bowser, the combined Dark Fawful/Dark Star Core was sucked up by Bowser and battled by Mario and Luigi, the only time he actually interacted with them in the game. The brothers were finally successful in destroying the core, which wiped out the Dark Star. Dark Fawful still remained however, and at first seemed to express remorse after remarking how unfairly his plans had fallen apart. However, he then immediately betrayed his words by exploding in a last-ditch effort to destroy Mario and Luigi, but his plan backfired as his self-destruction actually caused Bowser to regurgitate everyone he had sucked up earlier in the game.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Fawful appears as an Advanced-rank Primary Spirit (using his art from Bowser's Inside Story) with the effect of raising electric attack power. When fought in a Spirit battle, Fawful's Spirit possessed Iggy Koopa and fought alongside ROB in a stamina battle. He also started the battle wearing a Rocket Belt.

Trivia[edit]

  • In Superstar Saga, Fawful has 30 HP during the first band and 500 HP in the second battle.
  • In the Japanese version, Fawful is called Gerakobittsu, a play on "geragera", which is an onomatopoeia for obnoxious laughter. His English name seems to be a combination of "guffaw" and "awful". These both tie into the naming scheme present in Superstar Saga of naming various characters and places after different words for laughter.
  • In the final battle with Cackletta, she will occasionally summon an apparition of Fawful, who fires energy from his headgear at the Mario Bros., but is easily defeated.
  • In Super Paper Mario, one Sammer Guy named "Mustard of Doom" acts as an homage to Fawful. His speech pattern is identical to Fawful and he uses several of Fawful's quotes, including saying that his sword has fury. After being defeated, he specifically describes his enemy as an "awful" person in another reference to Fawful's name.
