Dodrio is a three-headed ostrich-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the evolved form of Doduo.

Information[edit]

Dodrio evolves from Doduo at Level 31. One of Doduo's two heads splits into two during the evolution process to form this unique, three-headed Pokémon. Their three heads are said to each represent joy, sadness and anger. It uses its three brains to execute complex plans. Although it can collect data and plan "three times as wisely", this also causes it to overthink sometimes and immobilize itself. Similar to its previous form, one head stays awake as a lookout while the other two are asleep. The three heads are attentive enough that anyone who looks away from a Dodrio even briefly is likely to be severely pecked. A Dodrio is satisfied when just one head eats.

When on guard, they usually look in three different directions at the same time. In addition to three heads, Dodrio is said to have three hearts and three sets of lungs, which allow it to run long distances without needing rest. It can run close to 40 miles per hour in prairies, and they can even run well in arid weather conditions.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Red and Blue Versions, Dodrio appeared uncommonly appeared at Cerulean Cave. In Yellow, it was rarely found at Route 17.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Dodrio rarely appeared at Routes 26 (Gold/HeartGold only), 27 (Silver/Crystal/SoulSilver only) and 28 and Mt. Silver. In Crystal and HeartGold/SoulSilver, the player can also obtain one by trading a female Dragonair to a trainer in Blackthorn City, and in HeartGold/SoulSilver it appeared at the Safari Zone's Rocky Beach area when enough Plains objects were present.

Dodrio could also be caught in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald at the Safari Zone.

Other Games[edit]

Dodrio could only be obtained in Pokémon Pinball, Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams by evolving a Doduo. A Shadow Dodrio could be snagged from Chaser Furgy at Citadark Isle in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. After being purified, this Dodrio could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Trozei!, Dodrio was found at Phobos Jet and Mr. Who's Den.

It appeared in Pokémon Ranger at Kisara Plains, and a Dodrio also appeared as Joel's partner Pokémon. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it was found at the second through ninth floors of Far Amp Plains. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Chroma Road. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it could be found at Canal Ruins and Ice Temple. Dodrio also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Windy Prairie.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • A Dodrio appeared in the first episode of Pokémon anime, where it was shown to crow at dawn in the manner of a rooster. A later episode featured a Dodrio as the Pokémon of the episode's villain, which he rode in a Pokémon race. It ultimately lost to the Ponyta/Rapidash that Ash was riding. During the Johto era episodes, Dodrio was shown as one of Falkner's Pokémon during his gym battle with Ash, and in another episode they acted as mounts for Diglett thieves. Gary's Doduo also evolved into a Dodrio at some point.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Yellow's Doduo evolved into a Dodrio near the end of the Yellow arc. It has remained part of her main team and is used as her main method of transportation.

Trivia[edit]

  • Dodrio's name is a combination of "dodo" (the extinct flightless bird) and "trio" (referring to its three heads).
  • Its reported max speed of 40 mph is oddly lower than Doduo's max speed of 60 mph.
