Debut Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Czar Dragon is a boss monster appearing in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its its Switch remake. He has a second undead form known as Zombone. He acts as the boss of the Barrel Volcano who is fought to reach the sixth Star Piece.

Background[edit]

Czar Dragon was a monstrous dragon formed out of a group of Lava Babbles grouping together within the heart of Barrel Volcano. He seemed to have been around for some time, as the volcano contained statues made in his likeness. According to his Monster List entry, the statues were made in an attempt to assuage his temper, but the likeness was off and ended up making Czar Dragon even angrier. Czar Dragon resembled a red dragon with Fire Babbles acting as his limbs.

In Super Mario RPG, Mario's group found and battled Czar Dragon while searching for the sixth of the seven Star Pieces. Czar Dragon was defeated and fell into the lava, but it instantly resurfaced as Zombone. Zombine resembled a skeletal dragon with arms and a longer tail, as well as wearing robes. Zombone was even more powerful than Czar Dragon, but it was still ultimately destroyed by Mario's group. After the battle, Mario's group found the Star Piece, only for the Axem Rangers to steal it away.

Zombone

Czar Dragon specialized in fire-based attacks. His special attacks included the fire attack Fire Wall, as well as Water Blast and Iron Maiden. Czar Dragon also had Special Defenses against Fire and Sleep attacks, but he had a weakness for Ice attacks.

Conversely, Zombone specialized in ice attacks. His special attacks were Blizzard, Blast and Storm. He had special defenses against Fire, Ice and all status-changing attacks. But Jump and Thunder attacks functioned as Zombone's weak points. Pure Water would also deal massive damage to Zombone.

Trivia[edit]

  • Czar Dragon is known as Kaiser Dragon in Japan, with both names referencing international terms for types of leaders, while Zombone's name is a simple combination of 'zombie' and 'bone', and it was known as Zombie Dragon in Japanese. Both characters seem to be named after Final Fantasy bosses. For Czar Dragon, Final Fantasy VI had an unused enemy called CzarDragon which would later make an official appearance as a superboss in Final Fantasy VI Advance with the name Kaiser Dragon. As for Zombone, the Zombie Dragon was a recurring enemy type throughout the series which was also depicted as a skeletal dragon, with its name having been localized as 'Zombone' in the English release of Final Fantasy VI.
  • Czar Dragon's appearance is reminiscent of the Blargg enemy, but it is unclear if they are actually connected.
  • In the Switch remake, the Monster List entry for Zombone notes that Zombone is wearing tattered clothing only after being zombified simply because the designer thought it would not properly look like a zombie otherwise, as a way of acknowledging the plot hole of Zombone's clothes.
  • His transformation into Zombone after falling into lava is similar to Bowser becoming Dry Bowser in New Super Mario Bros..
