Clefable is a large-fairy like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation Pokémon games. It is the evolved form of Clefairy, and the introduction of Cleffa in the second generation retroactively made Clefable into the third and final form of Cleffa's evolutionary line.
Clefairy evolves into Clefable when exposed to a Moon Stone, and it is described as a type of fairy. It is rarely seen due to being timid and protective of their own world. They avoid loud noises or busy places, refusing to come out of people and running and hiding the moment it sense is people. Clefable instead prefer quiet, remote mountains. It has sensitive ears that can pick up distant noises, to the point where it is said to hear a pin dropping 1,100 yards away.
They move by skipping lightly, as if using their wings, and they have been known to take strolls on lakes on quiet, moonlit nights. The full moon usually draws it to deserted lakes.
Clefable can only be obtained through evolution in most of the games until Pokémon: Black and White Versions, where they can be rarely found from rustling grass at the Giant Chasm.
In Pokémon Pinball as well as Pokémon Pinball: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Clefable could only be obtained through evolution. Among the Pokémon-related e-Reader games, Clefable was featured in the "Metronome" short in which performed Metronome, which either turned day into night (while summoning a Haunter that scared it away) or using Explosion with the end result of being covered in char. In Pokémon Trozei!, Clefable could be found in Endless Level 51, Forever Level 1, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, they appear on the first nineteen basement floors of Marine Resort. They also appear in Pokémon Rumble at Rocky Cave. In Pokémon Rumble Blast, it appeared at the Autumnwood area of Firebreathing Mountain once the main storyline was completed.
- In the Pokémon anime, Clefable were first shown at the end of an early episode where several Clefairy evolved at the end of the end of a Mt. Moon festival. They also appeared at another Mt. Moon festival in the Emerald Battle Frontier episodes.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Clefable was a main part of Green's Pokémon team after she evolved it towards the end of the Red/Blue/Green arc, although she has not been seen using it since her battle with Lorelei in the Yellow arc.
- One chapter of the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga featured Ash, Professor Oak and Bill bonding with Clefairy in the wild, with some of them being shown to evolve into Clefable with Moon Stones, at which point they left to explore the world.
- Clefable's name is a combination of the musical term "clef" and "fable".
