Chinchou is an electric angler fish-like Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. Its evolved form is Lanturn.

Information[edit]

Chinchou has a pair of antennae which evolved from a fin. Both antennae are filled with strong cells which generate electricity in positive and negative charges. When in danger, Chinchou releases this electricity to faint its foes. They live primarily in the dark depths of the ocean, where they communicate by flashing their lights as signals. It evolves into Lanturn at Level 27.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions, Chinchou could be fished at Routes 26 and 27, New Bark Town, Union Cave, Olivine Harbor, Vermilion City, and Pallet Town with the Super Rod (or less commonly using the Good Rod). In HeartGold/SoulSilver, it could also be fished at Routes 20, 21, 41 and 47 as well as Cinnabar Island. Chinchou could also be caught at the Beyond the Sea and White Lake courses of the Pokéwalker, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, they could be commonly found while diving to the seafloor at Routes 124 and 126. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, they could be fished with the Super Rod at Route 220 and were rare in Platinum. In Black and White, they could appear when fishing at Route 18 (rarely) and Driftveil City (commonly and moreso within fishing spots).

Other Games[edit]

In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Chinchou could be obtained by hatching one from an egg, and they also appeared as bumpers for the Ruby Field. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 12, Endless Level 9, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the seventieth through seventy-ninth floors of Silver Trench, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness it was recruitable at the first eighteen basement floors of Miracle Sea and the first four basement floors of Deep Miracle Sea.

In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Chinchou was found at Puel Sea. It also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Coral Sea and Eastern Sea.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Chinchou was featured in an episode of the Johto series which revolved around an annual Chinchou Parade. A trainer named Dayton owned the Chinchou leading the parade, which was called Bright. The Chinchou were shown to be capable of walking on land with their lower fins acting as feet. The Chinchou, including Bright, were all released into the ocean at the end of the episode, after helping to foil Team Rocket. Chinchou have made various other primarily minor appearances throughout the series, and in one case one was used by Misty's opponent at the Whirl Cup.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Chinchou made a brief appearance when Gold encountered several while searching for his Poliwag in the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc. Misty was later shown to own one which she used to illuminate Tohjo Falls.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a play on "chochin" (the Japanese word for "lantern") in reference to the "chochin-anko", the Japanese name for the footballfish which is a deep sea fish similar to the angler fish.
