Debut Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi

Cain is a playable unit featured in Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi as well as the remakes Monshou no Nazo and Shadow Dragon. He and Abel are the first playable Cavaliers available in the game (and the series as a whole).

Background[edit]

Cain was an Altean knight who was known for his loyalty and nickname of the "Great Bull". His companion and often rival was his fellow knight, Abel.

Book One[edit]

When the War of Darkness broke out, Cain had been part of King Cornelius's forces when he went to battle the Dolhr Empire. However, after they were betrayed by Gra, Cain witnessed Cornelius's death and was forced to flee back to Altea to warn Marth. He remained ashamed of this failure ever since. Cain arrived at the end of the second part of Shadow Dragon's prologue and told him about Cornelius's death and last words. Despite being badly wounded, he then began to accompany Marth's army for his own campaign against the Dolhr Empire. After the war ended, Cain became an instructor of younger knights.

Book Two[edit]

Three years later, Marth set out out on another campaign and left Cain behind to watch over Altea Castle in his absence. However, they were then invaded by Hardin's Archanean army. Cain was able to evade capture and was part of the resistence force. In Chapter 8, he was able to break through the enemy to reach Marth and warn him of Hardin's mysterious powers. He suggested an escape to the Khadein desert, which Marth complied with. After the war ended, Kain became leader of the Altean knights following Arran's death. Once Jagen died, Kain also took his place as Marth's primary advisor.

Other Appearances[edit]

  • Cain appears in both episodes of the Fire Emblem OVA, where he has somewhat of a fiery personality.

Trivia[edit]

  • He and Abel act as the red and green knights of Ankoku no Ryuu, Monshou no Nazo and Shadow Dragon, and thus act as the first example of that archetype in the series; Cain specializes in strength and defense while Abel specializes in skill and speed.
  • Cain and Abel's name come from the biblical story of Cain and Abel, two brothers who were the first children to be born to Adam and Eve, who were in turn the first people created. They have little more in common with their namesakes besides their names and brotherly friendship, as in the Bible Cain eventually betrays and kills Abel out of jealousy.
  • In Shadow Dragon, he receives Support Bonuses from Marth, Catria, Abel and Est.
