Bundt was a sentient wedding cake that was featured as a boss character in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. It was the last boss to be faced in the Moleville Region, which was the third main area of the game. Its lower layer is known as Raspberry.

Background

Bundt was created by Chef Torte and his apprentice to serve as the cake for the wedding of Booster and Princess Peach. Neither Torte nor his apprentice knew that the cake was alive and bore a malevolent will of its own. When Torte saw Mario trying to take the princess away, Torte attempted to battle him. During the battle, Torte's apprentice noticed Bundt moving several times, but Torte refused to believe the apprentice and chastised him. Bundt revealed itself, which frightened off the two Tortes.

The cake proceeded to engage Mario's group in an all-out battle. After enough hits, most of his body disappeared. Only the stump of the cake, referred to as Raspberry, remained. The cake was eventually finished off by Booster, who warfed it down in one bite, without any after-effects beyond feeling somewhat sick in the aftermath.

In the Switch remake, Bundt appeared for a rematch as a post-game quest (which was set before the main storyline's actual final battle). In that scenario, Chef Torte and his apprentice had made another Bundt cake, and this one was extra-fancy. The sleep-deprived Tortes brought the Extra-Fancy Bundt to the middle of Marrymore's chapel, where Mario's group could battle it again. They had been sure that they had made a normal cake this time, but once it became clear that this Bundt was alive too, they desperately started re-lighting its candles in hopes that would make it normal. Instead, it made it more powerful, as Bundt was excited by the implication of joyous occasion due to having been created for a celebration. Mario's group was still able to defeat Bundt, at which point it went inert. This time, it was not eaten, nor was any part of it destroyed. It was left in the middle of the chapel, with Peach hoping to get a non-sentient cake for the castle while Chef Torte went on to wish that he could make a normal cake.

Bundt had six candles above its head, each with 10 HP. All six had to be extinguished for Bundt to take damage, and Bundt would slowly re-ignite one unlit candle per turn. Bundt also unleashed powerful special moves such as Blizzard, Diamond Saw and Lulla-Bye. Bundt had special defenses against every type of attack save for Silence and Jump attacks, the latter of which served as its weakness.

Despite being lesser in HP, the Raspberry featured improved stats over the full Bundt. It additionally had several more powerful attacks in the form of Sand Storm and Drain Beam. It had the same special defenses and weak point as Bundt, however.

During the rematch in the remake, Extra-Fancy Bundt's new threat revolved around its candles. Chef Torte and his apprentice would try lighting multiple candles at a time in each turn, which could result in all candles being lit very quickly. Once all candles were lit, Bundt would unleash a deadly attack called Celebration Shot, which was a giant blast of energy powerful enough to instantly KO all party members on the field. Bundt would continuously use the attack as long as all candles were lit, so the candles had to be put out with normal attacks to keep all of them from being lit, and the Tortes could be easily put to sleep to prevent them from lighting candles. Aside from that, Extra-Fancy Bundt's moveset and weakness to jumping remained, but it could no longer be Silenced. Despite having HP, the Raspberry part is not actually fought in this battle, and it ends with Bundt's defeat.

Trivia

• Bundt is named after an actual type of doughnut-shaped cake, despite not being that type of cake. The discrepancy is noted in the Switch remake's Monster List description.
• In the Japanese version, Bundt was called Strawberry, making the cake Strawberry and Raspberry.
• According to the Monster List description for Raspberry, it wishes its creator had chosen more traditional strawberries instead of raspberries. This seems to also be a reference to Bundt's Japanese name of Strawberry.
• The Monster List also reveals that Extra-Fancy Raspberry is upset that it does not have candles of its own, implying that it has its own separate consciousness from Bundt.
