Blastoise is a large turtle-like Pokémon bearing water jets that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the third and final form of Squirtle's evolution chain. Blastoise was notably featured as the mascot Pokémon of Pokémon: Blue Version.
Information[edit]
Evolving from Wartortle at Level 36, Blastoise is a large blue tortoise that looks different from its predecessors. Instead of the furry ears and tail of Wartortle, Blastoise has normal ears and a small tail, with its main unique feature being pressurized water jets found on the shell. These jets are used for high speed tackles as well as for blasting out water with force that is even greater than a fire hose and hard enough to pierce concrete walls or thcik steel. The bullets of water fired from the cannons are also very accurate, being capable of striking empty cans from a distance of over 160feet.
Blastoise is a brutal Pokémon and intentionally heavy in order to withstand the recoil of the water jets firing. It can also simply crush its foe under its thick shell to cause fainting and withdraw into its shell in a pinch.

In Pokémon Pinball, Blastoise can be obtained through evolution. Blastoise also appears in Pokémon Trozei!, where it can be found on Endless Level 73, Forever Level 23, Pair Trozei or Mr. Who's Den. Within Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, a Blastoise appears as leader of Team Hydro, a Bronze Rank rescue team, and recruitable Blastoise can be found in the Western Cave's eighty-ninth through ninety-eighth floors. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, Blastoise are found in the first twenty-four basement floors of Lake Afar. Blastoise can also be obtained in Fall City in Pokémon Ranger, Vien Forest in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia and Silver Falls in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs. In Pokémon Rumble, Blastoise is found at Bright Beach. Blastoise initially appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, initially as a guard at the Granite Zone until he traveled to the Beach Zone to train himself.

- In the Super Smash Bros. series, Blastoise initially appeared in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item. Blastoise attacked with Hydro Pump by spraying bursts of water from its back cannons in each direction. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Blastoise also made a background appearance at the Kalos Pokémon League stage when in the form of the Flood Chamber.
- Blastoise has also been represented by a trophy in Melee and the Wii U game, a trophy of Mega Blastoise in the 3DS/Wii U games and an Advanced-rank Primary Spirit (that comes with a weakness to electricity) in Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Blastoise's Spirit would possess a giant Squirtle that has increased defense and starts the battle armed with a Super Scope.
In Other Media[edit]
- Blastoise make several appearances throughout the Pokémon anime. The first prominent episode revolving around a Blastoise was an episode in the Kanto era episode which featured an island of Squirtle and Wartortle that were led by one giant Blastoise that had been knocked out by a Jigglypuff that had gotten stuck in its shell. Additionally, Gary is later revealed to have gotten Squirtle as a starter Pokémon when he uses his Blastoise in battle with Ash at the Silver Conference, but it is defeated by Ash's Charizard.
- Within the Pokémon Adventures manga, Green's Squirtle eventually evolves into a Blastoise near the end of the Red/Green/Blue arc. She nicknames it Blasty and it becomes one of her primary Pokémon in following arcs. Blastoise also acts as a form of transportation in this incarnation by firing its water cannons while the rest of its body is withdrawn into its shell, allowing it to spin/fly through the air in the manner of Gamera while carrying passengers on its back. It later learns the ultimate water move, Hyrdo Cannon, during the FireRed/LeafGreen arc.
- Its name is a combination of "blast" (likely in reference to the cannons on its back) and "tortoise".
